CBCT-DT is a Canadian local station in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, owned by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and affiliated with CBC Television. It broadcasts on digital channel 13.

History

CBCT began operations on July 1, 1956 as CFCY-TV, under the ownership of Island Radio Broadcasting, the parent company of Charlottetown radio station CFCY. Island Radio's founder, Col. Keith Rogers, had hoped to get a TV station on the air in Charlottetown, but he died in 1954 before he could do so, leaving his family to realize his plans and launch the station two years later.

CFCY-TV's original studio location, along with its transmitter, was west of Charlottetown on the Trans-Canada Highway. In 1961, the studios relocated to an addition to the CFCY radio building on Kent Street in Charlottetown. Future political commentator and broadcaster Mike Duffy began his career at CFCY-TV as the host of a Saturday afternoon teen dance show.

During its early years, in addition to CBC network programming, CFCY-TV also aired locally-produced and syndicated shows. The station began airing network programming in color with the arrival of color television in Canada in September 1966. As the population of Prince Edward Island was too small to warrant establishing a second originating station in the province, the CBC purchased CFCY-TV in 1968 and recalled it to its current call sign on August 1 that year.

CBCT is the only originating TV station operating in Prince Edward Island, as all other TV service in the province is provided by rebroadcasters of stations in neighboring New Brunswick. It also currently functions as a semi-satellite of Halifax station CBHT-DT, with the exception of local advertising, CBCT's main newscast, CBC News: Compass, and a TV simulcast of the first hour of Island Morning, which airs on Charlottetown CBC Radio One station CBCT-FM.

Effective August 31, 2011, CBCT's digital signal, CBCT-DT, flash cut to the old analog signal's channel number, 13.
