Cartoon Planet was an animated comedy series that was spun off from the incredibly popular Space Ghost Coast to Coast. The series was originally created as kind of an opposite to Coast to Coast, where it took on the guise of an afterschool special that showed old cartoons for a hour. It was something like Banana Splits where the segments in between were just bumpers between cartoons.
Around 1997, however, the series removed all of the archive cartoons and increased the amount of skits, songs and comedy bits with Space Ghost, Brak and Zorak. The length of the show was decreased to thirty minutes and was turned more like a Coast to Coast for a younger audience. Unfortunately, the series also was rescheduled down from daily to weekly, until it was removed entirely from the network.
Since the show was mainly a variety show in nature, music was a major part of the series. For the most part, the series music was written by Eddie Horst aside from the opening and closing themes which were instrumental excerpts from "John Henry" by They Might Be Giants. The songs in question were, respectively, "Ghost Dance" and "Bye Bye, Goodbye, Goodbye, Everybody." The music spawned two albums, entitled Space Ghost's Musical Bar-B-Que: Featuring 25 Hickory-Smoked Harmonies and Space Ghost's Surf & Turf: With 22 Tiki-Torched Tunes. It also spawned a spin-off series of its own called Brak Presents The Brak Show Starring Brak in 2000, not to be confused with the Adult Swim animated sitcom, The Brak Show.
After several years of being off the air, the series was added to the Adult Swim schedule as the last show aired of the night.
