Plot Overview
Sarah and her son Martin are struggling to keep their brick and mortar bookstore running when their obnoxious landlord doubles their lease and threatens to toss them onto the street. Their salvation comes when Martin's love interest Dawn discovers a collection of issues of Brain Rot, an unpublished comic series written by George Romero. Much to their horror, however, they find that the 3-D glasses included with the comics can bring the zombies into the real world, and when one of them tries to attack Dawn, their only hope is to bring Romero himself off the page.
Notes
Trivia
The Show
- At the beginning, posters for Stephen Bachman and Jay Stratton's books can be seen in Booktime's "New Arrivals" section, both of whom are the authors from The Hat.
- Issues of Timeless from the previous episode, Doodles, can also be seen throughout Booktime.
- Anthony Moyer, who plays customer-turned-zombie Bub, also played a number of various different zombies in Day of the Dead.
- In the closing credits, the title is listed as "George Romero in 3D".
- The "Father's Day" ashtray can be seen on the computer desk in Booktime's back room.
- As in "The Crate", the episode's supernatural element is housed in an old crate hidden under a stairwell.
Behind the Scenes
Allusions and References
- This episode fittingly includes numerous references to George Romero's films, largely those of the Living Dead franchise:
- Dawn is named after Dawn of the Dead.
- Mr. Cooper is named after the human antagonist Harry Cooper from Night of the Living Dead, even resembling him in appearance and dress.
- Sarah is named after the female protagonist of Day of the Dead, and the zombified customer is named Bub, after the domesticated zombie in the same film.
- Martin is the outlier, but he is nevertheless named after Romero's 1977 vampire film of the same name.
- Martin says that he and Dawn are going to see Night of the Flesh Eaters, which was the intended title of Night of the Living Dead.
- Observing the undead Bub put on the 3D glasses and bringing more zombies out of the comics, Dawn says "They're actually learning." This line is said by Sarah in Day of the Dead.
- Running away, Martin says to Sarah and Dawn that the cellar is the safest place, alluding to Night of the Living Dead, where the human conflict rested with Harry arguing that it was the safest place to hold up.
- The first "3-D zombie" is killed when it walks over a downed filing cabinet and has the top of its head chopped off by a ceiling fan, similar to the way a zombie in Dawn of the Dead is killed by walking into the blades of a running helicopter.
- Asking if Dawn and Martin have any weapons, Romero lists some of the weapons used to kill the undead in Dawn of the Dead, including a screwdriver in the ear, alluding to how the zombie played by John Harrison, a frequent contributor to Creepshow, is killed in said film.
- Xenomorphs from the Alien franchise are mentioned by Martin as he leads Bub to the horror section of Booktime.
- Martin is seen reading the manga Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun as he works on the computer in Booktime's office.
