Biography

Angell was born on April 10, 1946 in West Barrington, Rhode Island. After graduating from Providence College with a bachelor's degree in English Literature, he moved to Los Angeles in 1977 and became a script writer, selling his first script to the producers of the series Annie Flynn. He joined Cheers as a staff writer in 1983 and became a supervising writer/producer with Peter Casey and David Lee in 1985. Angell, Casey and Lee later formed production company Grub Street Productions and co-created and produced the sitcom Wings in 1990, followed by Cheers spinoff Frasier in 1993. For their work on Cheers, Wings and Frasier, Angell, Casey and Lee received 37 Emmy Award nominations and won 24 Emmys, including awards for Outstanding Comedy Series for Cheers in 1989 and for Frasier in 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997 and 1998.

On September 11, 2001, Angell and his wife Lynn were aboard American Airlines Flight 11 when it was hijacked by members of Islamic terrorist group al-Qaeda and intentionally flown into the North Tower of the World Trade Center, killing everyone on board and causing a fire which led to the subsequent collapse of the North Tower 90 minutes after the initial impact, as part of the September 11 Islamic terror attacks on New York City and Washington, D.C. Due to the nature of the incident, Angell's death, along with those of everyone else aboard Flight 11 (excluding the suicide hijackers) and others killed in the attacks, is considered a homicide.
