Plot Overview
In the wake of the shooting of suspected road agent Ned Mason, Doc Cochran and Jane do their best to hide and protect the girl rescued by Bullock and Hickok, as they both realise there are people in town who will kill her to make sure it isn't proved that road agents killed her family.
Swearengen furiously discovers that the murders were carried out by brothers Ned and Tom Mason and Persimmon Phil, road agents in Swearengen's employ. He tells Tom about the shooting and convinces him to kill Hickok in revenge; he also beats Phil, ordering him to help clear up the mess he's made of the affair. After asking the Doc about the girl, Swearengen goes to see her in person, leaving Jane, who is guarding her, severely shaken.
Bullock and Star are having problems buying the lot for their store from Swearengen, who now suspects they may be in league with Hickok. Bullock later meets Hickok in the saloon, and Hickok asks Bullock to watch his back as he has spotted Tom Mason and knows he means him harm. Mason approaches Hickok, who shoots the would-be killer before he even draws his pistol, and Bullock backs Hickok's story that Mason clearly meant to kill him. This further fuels Swearengen's suspicions.
Brom Garret finds no gold at his newly acquired claim, and when the prospector Ellsworth says he should have found something by now, he becomes suspicious. He tries to sell the claim to Farnum, who had bid on it the night before, but Farnum - who was in on the scam, driving up the bid for Swearengen - refuses, claiming he was drunk that night. This only confirms Garret's suspicions, and he and his wife Alma wonder if they might be able to enlist Hickok's help in recovering their money.
Swearengen sends Dority to kill the girl, but Doc Cochran talks him out of it and they return to Swearengen together to tell him Jane has absconded with the child, which is true: she and Utter have her in one of their wagons outside town. Swearengen clears up the loose ends himself by killing Phil with a knife in his office.
