Basic Information
A guild-certified Companion and Serenity's "ambassador", Mal initially rented one of Serenity's shuttles to Inara in an effort to lend a certain air of legitimacy to the crew's less-than-legitimate business ventures, as well as opening doors by her mere presence aboard the ship - certain ports in the Core won't even let you dock without a Companion on board.
For her part, Inara joined Serenity's crew because she liked the ship, as well as the fact that shipping out aboard a transport like Serenity allowed her access to a range of clientele that would otherwise have been more or less unavailable to her.
