Basic Information
Scion of the wealthy Tam family from the Core Worlds, Simon was well on his way to becoming a great doctor when his sister, River, went off to the mysterious Academy. A time after her departure, Simon began receiving coded letters from his sister, saying simply "They're hurting us". Simon's parents wouldn't believe him when he told them about the code, so Simon gave up his Core World doctor's job and ended up rescuing his sister from Alliance custody at the cost of being disowned by his father.
Unwilling to connect his father with his crimes against the Alliance, Simon and River (who was confined to a stasis box) boarded Serenity on a trip to Boros, which turned disastrous when an Alliance spy, Dobson, also boarded the ship. Dobson accidentally shot engineer Kaylee Frye and Simon saved her, leading Mal to decide to bring Simon onto the crew as Serenity's doctor.
