  • The Ed Sullivan Show -- A caracature of TV host Ed Sullivan is emceeing a talent show at a roadside bar that Mike and Kara stop at. Guests who all appear are deceased celebrities or famous people, and include:
    • Truman Capote -- One of the guests appears as the short story/novelist, famous for "Breakfast at Tiffany's" (1958) "In Cold Blood" (1966).
    • Jimi Hendrix -- A young man performs, dressed as the legendary rock guitarist of the 1960s.
    • Laurel and Hardy -- Two men, dressed as Stan Laurel and Oliver Harvey, perform a comedy routine.
    • Liberace -- A party guest dresses as the legendary and flamboyant pianist.
    • Abraham Lincoln -- The 16th president of the United States, one of the guests dons the stovepipe hat and beard.
    • Marilyn Monroe -- A young woman, dressed as the legendary actress, performs a song.

  • "Laurie (Strange Things Happen)" -- The main plot of the second half of "Happy Halloween" is inspired by the 1965 Dickey Lee pop hit, where a young man meets a pretty teen-aged girl that turns out to be her ghost, the girl having died several years earlier. Major plot elements here include Mike giving Kara (the ghost) his sweater, and Mike later finding the sweater on Kara's grave.
