Plot Overview

Three nuns bring terminally ill Ivy Landers and her two children Gail and Toby to Dodge City by train en route to the nuns' eventual destination of Cimmaron, Kansas, but Ivy dies before the group arrives. Festus then meets the nuns, Mother Tabitha and her apprentices Sister Blanche and Sister Charles, and the kids in Dodge the next morning. Mother Tabitha explains to Festus that she and the other nuns are bringing Gail and Toby to live with their father, Pack Landers, which surprises Festus due to Pack's notoriety around town. The group then arrives at Pack's residence, a rundown cabin, which Festus and the nuns do some cleanup on before cooking up supper for themselves and the children.

The nuns soon learn of Festus' concerns about Pack when he arrives back at the cabin and pulls his shotgun on them - he is a surly, unsavory and alcoholic trapper who cares more about drinking than about his family or much else. He starts making racist comments toward the nuns (who are all black) and mocks and belittles their faith, but Mother Tabitha and the sisters refuse to be intimidated as they tell him about his chidren. Pack initially wants nothing to do with Toby and Gail and even intimidates them with his churlish attitude, but when he learns that the nuns are carrying money with them to use for building a new school in Cimmaron, he pretends to change his ways in an effort to con the nuns out of the money, then he threatens them with blackmail using the children as leverage, which catches the attention of Festus, Doc, Kitty and Matt.
