Trivia

The Show

Behind the Scenes

  • In the script, the scene between Jack and Alana mentions that Alana got a new dog to add to Will's.

Allusions and References

  • Hannibal's mention of being awoken early a census taker is a nod to a line from The Silence of the Lambs in which Hannibal mentions eating the liver of a census taker who tried to quantify him with a big Amarone. A slightly altered version was uttered in the film adaptation and arguably became one of the film's most famous lines.

Memorable Moments

  • Jack's rummaging through the building and making his discovery, paralleled to Hannibal performing his finished composition.

Quotes

  • Will: If the Ripper's killing, you can bet Hannibal Lecter's planning a dinner party. You and I probably sipped wine while swallowing the people to whom we were trying to give justice, Jack. Who does he have to kill before you open your eyes?
  • Hannibal: (to Jack) I can't help Will. I can't trust him. He's in a dark place where the shadows move and it's not safe to stand with him anymore.
  • Will: You should've let him die.
Gideon: Shoulda, coulda, woulda.
Will: He's gonna kill you, you know.
Gideon: Can't get me in here.
Will: No, here is exactly where he'll get you, Abel. The moment I convinced the chief of staff to put you in a cell next to me, you were stamped with an expiration date. Anyone who gets too close gets got. He's the devil, remember? Smoke.
  • (Chilton plays a recording of Gideon describing Lecter's home)
Jack: Abel Gideon is a lunatic.
Chilton: He is psychotic, not psychic.
  • Chilton: There has not been a word exchanged between those two men in my hospital that I have not heard.
Jack: Then you're aware what Will is accusing Hannibal Lecter of?
Chilton: Oh, yes. I am aware. And I am grateful that I have trouble digesting animal proteins, as the last meals I have shared with Hannibal Lecter have all been salads.
  • Chilton: Hannibal the Cannibal. That is what they'll call him, you know.
  • Hannibal: Last time someone rang my doorbell this early, it was a census taker.
  • Hannibal: Shall I carve?
Gideon: I think you already have.
Hannibal: Your legs are no good to you anymore. You've got a T4 fracture of the vertebra. This is a far more practical use of those limbs.
  • Gideon: You intend me to be my own last supper?
Hannibal: Yes.
Gideon: How does one politely refuse a dish in circumstances such as these?
Hannibal: One doesn't. The tragedy is not to die, Abel, but to be wasted.
Gideon: (slowly takes a bite as Hannibal watches) My compliments to the chef.
