Plot Overview
It is Superman's birthday, and Wonder Woman and Batman venture to the Fortress of Solitude to celebrate. There, they find a strange plant called "Black Mercy" attached to Superman. In his comatose state, Kal-El believes himself to be on Krypton with the wife and son he never had.
In the Fortress, Mongul reveals himself to the heroes and begins fighting Wonder Woman. Realizing that something isn't right, Superman sacrifices his perfect world to protect his friends. Mongul is soon defeated by Superman and finds himself in the grip of the black mercy.
Notes
Comic Book Parallels
- Adaption: This episode is based off the comic story of the same name found in Superman Annual #11, written by Alan Moore with art by Dave Gibbons.
- Krypto: Krypto the Superdog makes his first appearance in Superman's hallucination. Rather than being Superman's dog, he belongs to his son, Van-El.

Behind the Scenes
Allusions and References
- Old Flame: Superman's wife in his hallucination, Loana, looks very much like Lois Lane, yet she has the red hair of his high-school crush, Lana Lang.
- Zod: When Van-El accidentally reveals to his father that he is having a surprise party, his mother tries to cover up by telling him he confused it with "little Zod's" party. Zod is of course the Kryptonian villain in the comics made famous in the movie Superman II.
- Kandor: Brainiac mentions that traffic on the Kandor Skyway is backed up to the golden volcano. In the comics, Kandor was a Kryptonian city that was shrunk down and put in a bottle by Brainiac.
