Basic Information

Before Oceanic 815

Carole Littleton is an Australian woman who once fell in love with Christian Shephard. However, Christian had a wife and a son, Jack, back home in the States. When Carole fell pregnant, Christian supported her and she gave birth to their daughter, Claire.

While Claire was still a baby, Christian visited frequently, bringing presents and singing to Claire at night. Carole's sister, Lindsey, did not get along with Christian and didn't like Carole's relationship with him. Ultimately, Carole realized that Christian's number one priority was his family back home and decided to raise Claire on her own. She cut ties with him and ordered him to stay away from her and Claire. As Claire grew older, Carole told her that her father died when she was a baby.

When Claire was a teenager, Carole's relationship with her daughter was very rocky. One day, while driving with Claire, they had a heated argument. Claire lost control of the car and caused a massive accident. Carole was thrown out the front window of the car and ended up in a coma. Christian received word of the accident and returned to Australia to take care of Carole's medical costs. During this time, Claire met her father for the first time.

Carole remained comatose for years, but Claire continued to visit, never giving up hope that her mother would recover. Claire would sit in the hospital talking to Carole and watching nature programs on the television, which Carole liked to do before the accident. Claire started dating a guy named Thomas, and eventually fell pregnant. When Claire was eight months pregnant, she decided to give her baby up for adoption to a married couple in Los Angeles. Before leaving for the States, Claire visited her mom one last time, telling her about being pregnant and the adoption plans. She promised to be back soon.

After Oceanic 815

Sometime after Claire's plane, Oceanic 815, crashed over the South Pacific, Carole awoke from her coma. In December 2004, a plane wreckage was found at the bottom of the ocean and the world was lead to believe that it was Oceanic 815. All passengers were reported to have died in the crash.

In January 2005, however, the world was shocked when six passengers of the plane were revealed to have survived the crash. They were returned to the States and branded as the Oceanic 6. Among them were Jack Shephard, Christian's son and Claire's half-brother. Carole couldn't believe the coincidence of her daughter being on the same flight as her brother whom she didn't even know. In July 2005, a memorial service was held for Christian and Carole decided to attend. After the service, she approached Jack and offered her condolences for his father's death. She explained to him who she was and that Christian had a daughter who was one of the passengers who died in the crash that Jack survived. Unbeknownst to Carole, Claire didn't really die in the crash, but ended up on an island with Jack and more than forty other survivors. Jack and the rest of the Oceanic 6 were for some reason covering up the true details of the crash and pretended to be the only six survivors. Kate Austen was another member of the Oceanic 6, along with her son, Aaron. However, Aaron was actually Claire's son, whom she gave birth to on the island. As part of the cover-up, Kate claimed that it was her child, and Carole was completely unaware that Aaron was her grandson.
