Basic Information

Before Oceanic 815

Roger was married to a woman named Emily in the early 60's. When she was seven months pregnant with their first child, they went for a hike in the woods outside Portland. During the hike, Emily fell into early labor, and Roger delivered their baby boy in the woods. Emily felt weak and Roger could clearly see something was wrong with her. He rushed through the forest with her and the baby until they reached the road where they were helped by Horace and Olivia - a couple who happened to drive by at that time. It was too late however, and Emily passed away on the roadside. Her final wish before she died was for Roger to name their son Benjamin.

Roger was never able to cope with Emily's death and blamed Ben for her death, since his premature birth is what caused her to die. He struggleed to find work, but was helped out by Horace Goodspeed, who told him about the DHARMA Initiative and how their research would change the world. Horace offered Roger a job, which took him and Ben to the island. Once their, Roger was quite disappointed to find out that he would actually be working as a janitor, instead of being part of the actual research. Despite his disappointment, he took the job and he and Ben settled in at the Barracks, along with the other DHARMA staff members.

Roger soon found out that some strange things were going on on the island. One day, while he and another worker were on their way back home after making a delivery to one of the DHARMA research stations, they landed up in the middle of a shootout between the DHARMA members and the original inhabitants of the island. Horace refered to these people as "the hostiles" and tried to assure Roger that everything was under control.

Roger would spend most of his nights drinking beer and getting drunk on the living room couch. On Ben's first birthday on the island, it was another one of those nights for Roger, and he completely forgot his son's birthday. It was only when he spotted a gift that Ben got from a friend, that he remembered. He apologized to Ben for forgetting, and remarked that it was difficult to celebrate on the day that Ben killed his mother. This sent Ben running off into the jungle crying.

When Ben had grown up, he and Roger were partnered up to do deliveries together, but they still had a strained relationship. Roger still forgot Ben's birthday year after year. One year, on Ben's birthday, he sincerely apologized for forgetting again, and suggested that he and Ben have a couple of beers together after their shift, to have some father and son time together. However, Roger was unaware that Ben had secretely joined forces with "the hostiles" and that that was the day when they would purge the entire DHARMA Initiative. After they finished their deliveries, Roger drove up to a hill and opened a can of beer. Ben asked him if he really blamed him for Emily's death. He told Roger that he also missed her, but that he was fed up of putting up with him. He put on a gas mask and opened a canister, which instantly poisoned Roger, killing him right there in the DHARMA delivery van. Ben left his father's body there and returned to the Barracks.

After Oceanic 815

Season Three

Roger's body remained in the DHARMA van for many years, until one day, the van was discovered by Hurley. He and Jin removed Roger's disintegrated body from the van so that they could try and get if fixed.
