Matchmates is a pilot for a game show intended for NBC daytime. It is an adaptation of the Australian edition of the show.
Two couples solved word puzzles based on how well they knew each other. In front is a game board of sixteen squares with four categories across (all based on romantic situations) and four squares up and down--three letters and a "Wild" spot. The wife of one team selects a square and writes down a response based on the category and the beginning letter (the "Wild" box could be any other letter). If the husband matches the response, they are shown a word in that box which is a clue to the puzzle. If the responses don't match, the other couple is shown the word. Play continues until the puzzle is solved. The first couple to solve it wins $500.
The first couple to score $1000 is champion and plays the bonus round for $5000. In 25 seconds they must solve five puzzles. Eight words are put up one at a time and out of position. They hit a buzzer to stop the clock and try to solve the puzzle. The first puzzle is worth $200 and it doubles with each correct solve. This bonus round would be tweaked and reused on Sale of the Century.
Matchmates was planned for NBC daytime but was rejected in favor of Family Ties repeats.
