Peter Potamus and His Magic Flying Balloon (also known simply as The Peter Potamus Show) is an animated comedy airing in syndication and then later on ABC.
Peter is a quixotic purple hippo piloting a hot air balloon that had a dial with which he and his monkey companion So-So could travel back in time and lend a hand to past figures in need. Also featured on the show were Breezly and Sneezly (a polar bear and a seal who frequently infringed on an Arctic army base) and Yippey, Yappey and Yahooey (a trio of Medieval canines who haphazardly guarded a dyspeptic king--the three were informally known as "The Goofy Guards").
When the show began a run on ABC in 1966, Breezly and Sneezly traded places with Ricochet Rabbit from companion Hanna-Barbera series Magilla Gorilla. The title Peter Potamus And His Magic Flying Balloon was actually never used in any official capacity. It was a line used in a Magilla Gorilla cartoon, and the Internet simply applied it as the title of this show. Since its inception, Hanna-Barbera publicity material bills it as The Peter Potamus Show.
In 2003, Peter would become a sex-crazed assistant on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim series Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law. In 2021, he'd become an anime nerd on Jellystone!
The Peter Potamus Show was produced by Hanna-Barbera in association with Screen Gems Television (which also originally distributed the series). Following several changes in distributors over the years, the show is now under the ownership of WarnerMedia via Turner Entertainment (which owns most of the Hanna-Barbera catalogue), with distribution handled by Warner Bros. Television.
