Plot Overview

Flashbacks of various characters on how they all ended up at Fox River State Penitentiary. Basis of Michael's ingenious break-out plan are revealed.

  • Lincoln is in prison because of Michael. His debt of $90,000 for Michael's education led him to the garage where Steadman was supposedly killed. He was charged with Steadman's murder and sentenced to death.
  • Sara was a morphine addict. After witnessing an accident that possibly took a boy's life (who she couldn't help because she was impaired by the drugs), she decided to changed her life. At a meeting for ex-addicts, she met Bellick who told her about an job opening for a doctor at Fox River State Penitentiary.
  • Sucre fell in love with Maricruz and thought he needed money to make her happy. He told his cousins that he planned on proposing to Maricruz even though he didn't have the money to buy a ring. With a gun in hand, Sucre went to rob a store. However, his cousin Hector called 911 the minute Sucre went into the store. Sucre was arrested for aggravated robbery.
  • C-Note was in the US army. While he was on duty, he witnessed a prisoner being tortured. After he filed the report for prisoner abuse and reaffirmed his stand to his captain against prisoner abuse, his captain had him dishonorably discharged from the army. Back at home, C-Note couldn't get a job because of that dishonorable discharge. Hence, he agreed to drive a truck that was loaded with illegal substances. C-note was caught and arrested.
  • T-Bag has eluded the authorities and is one of America's most wanted criminals. He leads a seemingly normal life, arriving at his girlfriend's place for dinner where he taught his girlfriend's daughter her 9 times table. Meanwhile in the kitchen, his girlfriend, Susan Hollander notices a picture of him on America's Most Wanted on the TV. T-Bag was arrested and sent to Fox River. When Susan comes to visit him, T-Bag professes his love for her. Susan is disgusted at how T-Bag had betrayed her and had murdered all those children. T-Bag also feels betrayed and threatens her that he still remembers where she lives.
  • Michael finds out why Lincoln had a $90,000 debt. He constantly visits Lincoln, who is now in a prison. When Lincoln's appeal is denied, Lincoln tells Michael he is being transferred to Fox River State Penitentiary. Immediately, Michael recognizes the name and goes back to his workplace to get the blueprints for the prison. He tells Lincoln that it's his turn to look out for him as Lincoln has always done so for Michael. Michael becomes determined in getting his brother out. After trying unsuccessfully to remember the blueprints, he figures out a way to bring the blueprints with him into the prison - the tattoo.

Quotes

  • Michael: I have to get back to work. Speaking of which, I heard you got fired a few weeks ago, what was it this time?
Lincoln: Do you really wanna know, or are you just enjoying the view from your high horse?
Michael: You know what I want, to not have to be the older brother for my older brother.
  • Sara: (in a singsong voice) I brought you a gift from the hospital. I brought you a gift from the hospital.
(She hands three sterile hypodermic needles over to her boyfriend)
  • Bellick: (to Sara) I might know of a job opening where I work... You heard of Fox River?... Yeah, I know it sounds like a strange idea but maybe... maybe you and I could... maybe we could talk about it over dinner. I got a gift card to the Red Lobster over off the interstate.
