Biography

Hammond studied photography and television production at Harrogate College of Art and Technology before starting his broadcasting career at BBC Radio York. From there he went on to work at BBC Radio Cumbria, Leeds and Lancashire. He left in 1995 and took a public relations job where he was involved in corporate events for clients such as the Ferrari Owners Club and Renault Sport. In 1998 he got his first TV job presenting Motorweek on the Men & Motors channel on satellite TV.

Since then Hammond has worked on numerous lifestyle and motoring shows for cable and satellite channels. He started presenting Top Gear in 2002. His short stature (5'7"), especially when compared to co-presenter Jeremy Clarkson (6' 5"), resulted in his Top Gear co-presenters to nickname him "Hamster". They also poke fun at his numerous paid appearances at events or as a speaker. He has also presented Should I Worry About...? on BBC One, Brainiac: Science Abuse on Sky One, Time Commanders on BBC Two, among numerous other shows and specials. He also writes a weekly column in the motoring section of The Daily Mirror.

Hammond lives near Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England with his wife Amanda and their two daughters, Isabella and Willow. He also has three horses, four dogs, two cats, a rabbit, chickens, and sheep.
