Basic Information
Shaggy is 16 years old and is essentially Scooby-Doo's partner in crime-solving. He is tall, quite thin (his wiry frame is useful in escapes), has a goatee beard and a voracious appetite. He has been known to snack on Scooby's dog treats Scooby Snacks. He is based on Dobie Gillis character Maynard G. Krebs. His main catch phrase is "Zoinks!", used primarily when confronted by monsters and ghosts.
Character History
Shaggy's character has remained quite uniform throughout; he was never identified by his formal name Norville until A Pup Named Scooby-Doo. Fans have seen him romantically paired with Velma, but in Scooby-Doo and the Reluctant Werewolf, he has a girl friend named Googie. In Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated, Velma tries to start a romance with him, and in Scooby-Doo: Abracadabra-Doo!, Velma's kid sister Madelyn has a crush on Shaggy. He also fell in love with Crystal, a photographer, who would eventually break Shaggy's heart after revealing herself as an alien (Scooby-Doo and the Alien Invaders).

Trivia
- When Warner Bros. began making their made-for-video Scooby movies, Casey Kasem refused to return as Shaggy's voice unless the character was made a vegetarian. Billy West, then Scott Innes filled in; Kasem would return in 2002. Kasem (now deceased) subsequently retired from the role, which has since been taken over by current portrayer Matthew Lillard (who also played Shaggy in two live-action Scooby-Doo movies).
