Plot Overview

The first episode of Scrubs introduces us to the staff at Sacred Heart, a struggling hospital in what is assumed to be Southern California. Our hero is John 'JD' Dorian, a lovable geek fresh from med school who isn't quite sure that he can make it in the real world of medicine. JD's inner monologue helps keep the show flowing and it's a very rare occasion that it isn't the focal point of an episode.

On the surgical side of things, Christopher 'Turk' Turk is JD's college roommate who fits so well into the surgical boys club that JD is worried about losing his best friend.

We quickly learn that JD leads a rich fantasy life and are introduced to one of the trademarks of the series, JD's fantasy cutaways. One of the first of these follows the introduction of Elliot Reid, a sexy but tactless medical intern who instantly shows her competitive spirit.

Riding herd over the new fish are the longtime staff of the hospital. Dr. Bob Kelso, the chief of staff, is a tyrant that at first comes off as caring, but soon shows his true stripes to the interns. Dr. Perry Cox is that typical TV creature, the jerk who turns out to have a heart of gold but consistently good writing and well acted performances from John C. McGinley keep him from turning into a total caricature.

Along with Doctor Cox, Nurse Carla Espinosa helps 'JD' take his first steps towards really becoming a Doctor, her sometimes acerbic manner hiding a caring motherly personality. JD also manages to draws the eyes of the nameless Janitor, a sadistic individual who delights in tormenting him, yet seems to think he's teaching JD something along the way.

Quotes

  • J.D.: Hey Turk, you know how I'm totally down with the rap music?
Turk: Dude, be whiter.
  • Ted: Finally doctors, if there is a mistake, don't admit it to the patient. Of course, if the patient is deceased... and you're sure... you can feel free to tell him or her anything!
  • Elliot: Anyway, I know what you're thinking.
J.D.: (In head) Your butt looks like two Pringles hugging. (Out loud) No you don't.
  • Dr. Cox: Carla, can I ask you a personal question? Do you spray the perfume on, or do you fill your bathtub up with it at home and just splash around in it?
  • Dr. Cox: Did you actually just page me to find out how much Tylenol to give to Mrs. Lensner?
J.D.: I was worried that it could exacerbate the patient's...
Dr. Cox: It's Regular-Strength Tylenol. Here's what you do. Get her to open her mouth, take and handful, and throw it at her. Whatever sticks, that's the correct dosage.
  • Dr. Cox: Write this down, newbie. If you push around a stiff, nobody will ask you to do anything.
  • Janitor: Door's broke. This'll be the fifth time or so it won't open.
J.D.: Maybe there's a penny stuck in there.
Janitor: Why a penny?
J.D.: I don't know...
Janitor: Did you stick a penny in there?
J.D.: No, I was just making small talk.
Janitor: If I find a penny in there, I'm taking you down.
  • Dr. Kelso: Dr. Dorian. Do you not realize that you're nothing more than a large pair of scrubs to me? For God's sake, the only reason I carry this chart around is so I can pretend to remember your damn names.
