Plot Overview
When Spock is found to not be active in Starfleet, it is surmised that something happened in his past. He enters the mysterious time portal (from the original series episode "City On The Edge Of Forever") where he discovers himself as a child--undisciplined and easily picked on. But the child Spock is threatened by a beast. The adult Spock and the young Spock's pet intervenes but at the cost of mortally wounding the pet. He must decide whether to let the pet live, in which case it would suffer lengthy pain, or let him die with dignity. The adult Spock tells him "A life should be mourned but only if the life was wasted. Ichia's (the pet's name) was not." The young Spock allows his pet to die peacefully and learns to control his emotions. The adult Spock returns from the vortex, with his place in time re-established.
