Star Trek: The Animated Series is an animated continuation of the adventures of Captain Kirk and the Enterprise crew. The show was voiced by most of the actors from Star Trek: The Original Series and billed as a Saturday morning children's show. Ultimately, it failed, and only ran for one season (although it did win an Emmy for Outstanding Children's Animated Program), plus a protracted extension into a second of six episodes. Gene Roddenberry had stated that with the possible exception of the episode "Yesteryear," the show should not be considered canon. CBS Television Studios (successor-in-interest to Paramount Television, distributor of the DVD set and the current Star Trek rights owner), has since stated that it should.
