Plot Overview

Kirk, McCoy, and crewman Darnell pay a visit to a nearby Planet. The purpose is a twofold one: first, to deliver some salt to and, at the request of Dr. Crater, the Planet being in short supply; and second, a personal visit. McCoy wants to reunite with an old flame. The old flame is Nancy Crater (now married to Dr. Crater). McCoy remembers her as a very young woman. As they greet each other after many years, she still looks the same. Literally the same, not a gray hair on her. However, Kirk sees the same woman, but with some gray hair. Crewman Darnell sees a different, a woman Darnell himself had knew from his past. Kirk, McCoy, and later the entire crew will learn that this woman that McCoy loves so much is in reality, an alien creature that can take the shape of any human being. Its main purpose is to consume salt and salt tablets. Unfortunately, it has to kill and feed off the salt within the human body. This creature had killed the real Nancy Crater, and has assumed her form. Dr. Crater knew about the creature, was going to destroy the creature after it had killed his beloved wife Nancy, but decided to keep it alive. Perhaps it was out of a sense of learning more about the creature, and having takened the form of Nancy (to whom he still has love for) he felt a sense of loneliness and decided not to kill the creature. He will occasionally call Starfleet to request salt for his Planet (salt, of course, for the creature). Before all of this is exposed, the creature will take the lives of three crewman and Dr. Crater. It's fate will be sealed by (ironically) Dr. McCoy who sees that the creature in Nancy's form attempting to kill Kirk. This had to be, for McCoy, a devastation.
