The $20,000 Pyramid was a retitled edition of The $10,000 Pyramid, the game show which began on CBS in 1973. It had moved to ABC in May of 1974. It was the third edition of the series.
Gameplay was identical--celebrity/civilian teams communicate words for points. In this edition, a player going to the Winner's Circle the first time plays for $10,000. If that player wins a second trip to the Winner's Circle, he/she plays for a total of $15,000. A third trip is worth a total of $20,000.
A bonus card, "Big 7" was employed during the regular game, awarding $500 to a player getting seven items out of seven. A player playing a perfect score of 21 wins a bonus prize.
From October 1 to November 9, 1979, a six-week series of shows with kids and their parents playing the game was aired as Junior Partner Pyramid. The only difference was that the teams were given 35 seconds per category in the main game. An all-celebrity Junior Pyramid special aired on ABC in prime time on September 2, 1979.
This edition was noted for its June 27, 1980 finale, as Dick Clark showed celebrity guests Bill Cullen and Lois Nettleton subjects on the Pyramid they would have used if they wanted to save some money: "Used Car Dealers You Can Trust," "Hit Shows On NBC-TV" (this prompted NBC programming chief Fred Silverman to cancel Stewart's Chain Reaction in retaliation), "Oil Companies In Bankruptcy," "Famous Japanese Rabbis," "Things (Henry) Kissinger Didn't Foul Up," and "Famous Italian TV Directors" (they named an actual one--the show's director Mike Garguilo).
