Plot Overview

Bobby and Cindy are watching a television adaptation of "Cinderella." Bobby remarks that the plot about stepmothers and stepsisters being mean and wicked is true. Several things then happen to back the youngest boy's claim: Carol asks Bobby to try on some of Peter's old shirts; older sisters Marcia and Jan act snotty around Bobby; and then Carol makes an ill-timed request to help clean the chimney flue. Bobby decides he's unappreciated and unloved, and decides to run away.

Mike and Carol sense that Bobby is depressed and decide to buy him a bicycle to cheer him up; however, they renege on the purchase at the last moment. After Greg lets slip that Bobby is deciding to run away, Mike and Carol decide to use a little reverse psychology on Bobby, who has packed his suitcase. Mike tells Bobby that he needs a job to support himself, to which his son replies he can finger paint and glue things. With that knowledge, Mike lets Bobby go ... only to be greeted at the steps by Carol. Carol explains that she, too, is unhappy and tells her youngest stepson that they'd probably be better off together. Bobby catches on and says that she doesn't need to run away ... which is exactly what Carol wanted to hear. She then tells Bobby that "the only steps in this house" are those leading upstairs. Bobby happily announces, "Me and mom are back home again!"

  • Cinderella — At the beginning of the episode, Bobby and Cindy watch a television adaptation of the children's fairy tale. Several plot details from the story are incorporated throughout the episode's script, including rude behavior by stepsisters, and a request by the stepmother (to the central character) to sweep out the chimney duct.
