- Her mother, Elizabeth was a homemaker and her father, Joseph was a tobacco sharecropper
- Taught to sing by her mother when she was just 2 years old

- Graduated from St. Francis Academy in Owensboro, Kentucky in 1951
- Attended the American Academy of Dramatic Arts
- Was diagnosed with a bone deformation of the inner ear in the mid-1950s and underwent surgery to prevent deafness
- Married her first husband, Ira Bernstein in 1956; they divorced in 1985; together, they had four children: daughters Barbara & Elizabeth, and sons Joseph & Bob
- Had five grandchildren
- Was married to hypnotherapist Dr. John George Kappas from 1987 until Kappas' death in 2002
- During her time on "The Brady Bunch" (which was filmed in Los Angeles, California), Florence flew to New York City every weekend to see her family
