Katchoo is the fifth episode of the first season of The Brady Bunch.

Plot Overview

Jan is kept home from school one day when she begins sneezing like crazy. At first, it appears she had caught a bad cold, but later she feels just fine. Later, she's all stuffed up again. Initially, everyone comes to the silly conclusion that Mike is the source, but then all noses turn to Tiger (who happened to be in the room, unknown to anyone, when Mike was also with Jan). When it is confirmed that the pooch is the source of Jan's sneezing, Mike breaks the very difficult news to his sons: The dog - who had been with the family before Bobby was born, and when their mother was still alive - must go.

The boys - and everyone else - realize they have to do something ... anything ... to keep Tiger a part of the family. After at least four baths (and Tiger becoming progressively less cooperative each time), Jan's allergy surely would be cured, right?

Wrong. On the morning after Tiger got all his baths, Jan greets the dog and immediately sneezes. Mike decides that Tiger has to go to his folks to live and leaves with the dog. Just then, Jan realizes that he forgot the dog's new flea powder.

A sneeze later, the Bradys joyfully realize that Jan isn't allergic to Tiger, but instead, his new flea powder. Everyone frantically runs out of the house to stop Mike from taking Tiger away.

That night, Tiger sleeps at the foot of Jan's bed, the pooch's place in the family secure.

Behind the Scenes

According to Barry Williams' retrospective "Growing Up Brady," Tiger was killed during the filming of this episode. He had been struck by a flower delivery truck on the studio lot (late one evening, after that day's filming had ended), and the dog's death was not realized until a replacement dog refused to behave during filming.

Various replacement dogs were tried over the next two seasons, but none worked out. Eventually, the character of Tiger was eventually written out.
