Plot Overview

Jessica Semplar is, in many ways, an ordinary 11 year old: she paints, she plays Hungry Hungry Hippos, and she has an Invisible Friend named Ralph. But she is also a voluntary mute, and when she witnesses the assassination of a Turkish diplomat on a presidential hunting trip, she is the only person who can shed light on the situation. Now, the assassination of a foreign dignitary on US soil is FBI jurisdiction (as one of Hobbes' old Quantico acquaintences haughtily reminds him), but the coincidental death of an endangered Peregrine Falcon bring the F&G-sponsored Agency to the scene. Darien must pose as Ralph, Jessica's invisible friend, to try and uncover the details of the assassination. But as he gets closer to the truth, it begins to look like one of the FBI investigators might be involved, and Jessica may be a target.

Quotes

  • (The Official has just given a very boring slide presentation on the Peregrine Falcon, and is preparing to brief the gang on the assassination)
The Official: Any questions?
Darien: Yeah, when're you gonna cut the crap?
The Official: Eberts, seal the briefing.
[Eberts walks over to the window and closes the blinds]
  • (The President has just stopped the Turkish Diplomat from shooting the Peregrine falcon, explaining it is endangered)
The President: We protect him, like we protect you!
(they laugh)
The Turkish Diplomat: (is shot in the chest)
