The Jetsons is an animated sitcom that aired on ABC for one season in 1962-1963 and was brought back over 20 years later, in 1985, in syndication. Hanna-Barbera produced the show throughout its run, with Screen Gems handling co-production and distribution of the first season. Following several distributor changes for the show over the years, Warner Bros. Television now owns the distribution rights to The Jetsons.
The Jetsons live in the future in the Skypad Apartments complex in Orbit City, where everything is available at the push of a button and all buildings (which are raised above the ground on adjustable columns) are made in the futuristic Googie architectural style popular in the 1950s and 1960s. George Jetson, the family patriarch, is a loving (albeit long-suffering) husband and dad and the brunt of verbal abuse from his tyrannical boss at Spacely Sprockets, Cosmo Spacely. Jane is his wise wife, Judy is a typical teenybopper daughter, and Elroy is his all-American-boy son. Astro, the pet dog, was found by Elroy and was brought home and upon being taken in by the family pretty much became George's lapdog. (His canine speech of starting all words with an "r" pre-dated Scooby-Doo by seven years.) In the 1980s syndicated series, they acquired a new pet, a critter named Orbitty.
The show ran one season in prime time on ABC, then moved to Saturday mornings where it had aired on all three networks and in syndicated reruns up to 1981. In 1985, it was revived for first-run syndication where two more seasons were produced as part of the Funtastic World of Hanna-Barbera block. Following the series, two TV movies were made, The Flintstones Meet the Jetsons in 1987 and Rockin' with Judy Jetson in 1988. The Jetsons, a theatrical film, was made in 1990 which sparked a minor backlash because Janet Waldo's voice recordings for Judy Jetson were re-recorded by pop-star Tiffany. In recent years, the Jetsons have been used in commercials for Electrasol and Tums. A live-action Jetsons movie is being planned by Warner Bros.
The Jetsons was the first ABC show to be aired in color, but there was a twist. ABC did not have color telecines at the time, so The Jetsons and The Flintstones films were sent to NBC, which transmitted color telecasts of the shows to ABC, which then sent those to affiliates.
