Plot Overview

Opening Monologue

Normal people say what they mean. They want something, they ask. Screwed up people never say what they mean, but if you grow up among them you learn their ways, their customs, their drinking habits. Until one day, you become known as... The Translator. When you can't communicate, you act out. It's called... acting out. But when you act out above a freeway exit ramp, it's called violating the penal code. When Dave and I were teenagers, had we seen a sign that said "penal code," we'd have stolen that too.

(singing)
They arrested us
Put us in jail
Four hours later
Dad brought bail
He took us home
Put us on the line
We did hard time
Hard time

After that, I decided Dad would only humiliate me for two more years. Three years later, I was on my own. Dave still lives with Dad because he doesn't have my spontaneity.

The Show

After attempting to move out of his father's house, Dave is arrested when Ken called the cops on him alleging "grand theft." Titus and Tommy are called down to the police station in order to bail Dave out of jail and listen to Ken gloat about how he had Dave arrested for "stealing his VCR." Dave places the blame on Titus, who told him not to tell his father.

Ken insists that he won't drop the charges because he's trying to teach Dave a lesson, or at least that's what Titus thinks. Tommy convinces Titus that he's the one being taught the lesson. Titus attempts to explain himself, but winds up incriminating himself as an accessory and is also thrown in jail. Eventually, Erin shows up to bail her boyfriend out of jail. She convinces Ken to drop the charges.

However, when they realize that Ken will spend more time with them now that Dave has moved out of the house, Erin forces Titus to get his brother to move back in while she convinces Ken to let him move back in. Through bribery using a new TV and a DVD player, Titus and Dave work out a deal. Through the art of dysfunctional argument, Dave and his father make up and he moves back in. But then Dave accidentally admits to being the owner of the ounce of marijuana found in the VCR and is put back in jail.

Allusions and References

  • Viking Funeral: As a sign of tribute, Slavic Vikings (and possibly also Norse Vikings) laid the bodies of their captains to rest by immolating the corpse on a boat and sending it out to sea.

Memorable Moments

  • In a flashback, Tommy is performing for some unseen children as a clown when something goes horrible wrong and his foot explodes. A midget dressed like a fire-fighter runs out and dumps a bucket of confetti on what's left of Tommy's foot and begins to check around the stage for the toe that was blown off in the accident.

Quotes

  • Titus: The only way to tell my dad your plans is to write him a note, and tie that to a brick, and then throw it through his window. Course, now Dad's armed with a brick.
