Ultra Q is the first series in the Ultraman science fiction franchise. Although the franchise would eventually take a turn more towards superhero action, Eiji Tsuburaya originally intended the series to be more like The Twilight Zone, in which supernatural phenomena would be investigated. However, the Tokyo Broadcasting System convinced Tsuburaya to focus more on monsters because of the popularity of Godzilla and Gamera at the time.
