Veronica Mars — Season Two

Ahoy, Mateys! is the eighth episode of the second season of Veronica Mars, and the thirtieth episode overall. When a family of one of the students killed in the school bus crash ask for help, Keith attempts to find the identity of the stalker mocking the family while Veronica continues to help Logan clear his guilt of being accused of being the one who killed Felix Toombs.

Mystery of the Week

• Haunted: The Oliveres family lost their only son, Marcos in the school bus disaster. Frustrated and distraught, they began suing the school district for negligence. Once they filed their suit, they began to be 'haunted' by the 'ghost' of their son; Miniature school buses, voicemails with recordings of their son and other occurrences happen as an apparent attempt to scare them out of the suit. The two hire Keith to get to the bottom of the issue. He quickly finds an MP3 player, which was bought by the school district, broadcasting Marcos' voice over the car radio. The principal brushes off Veronica's inquisition, but she discovers that Marcos was a DJ for a pirate radio station—Ahoy Mateys!—in which he routinely antagonized the school with hit rants. Mysteriously, the show took a sabbatical, after which Marcos was no longer part of the production. Veronica and Mac find where the broadcast is by tracking the signal, to the home of vice-principal Van Clemmons where his son Vincent (Butters) has been broadcasting the show as the sidekick. Vincent explains that he doesn't know why Marcos left the show, but it occurred after he went to camp and changed completely. Veronica discovers that this camp was created to attempt to "heal" teenagers' sexuality with the power of God. Meanwhile, at the stakeout, Keith finds another school bus and a scrap of paper with Simon & Stern letterhead and the security code for the house on it, however he realized that evidence was planted because the fish were fed by the person who "broke in." Keith suggests that they take the settlement. Meanwhile, Veronica traces an anonymous email to Roxie's house. There she finds Ryan, a boy who knew that Marcos and Butters did the radio show and was in love with Marcos. He was the one who left the messages and toy buses, because he blames his parents for his death. After Marcos was sent to SelfQuest, he was desperate to win back his parents and, thus, went to "normal" things like the baseball field trip.

Felix's Murder

• Veronica tracked a complaint against the plastic surgeon to a patron of a bar used by the Fighting Fitzpatricks, who were none too happy to find Veronica snooping around.
• A flashback purportedly from a PCH biker's sides of the story shows Logan pulling out a knife and slashing Felix when he takes his keys with intent to steal his SUV. The other bikers flee when they hear a truck.
• Two men kidnap Logan Echolls and attempt to torture him into telling them the truth about what happened that night. They dump him when he doesn't give them anything other than that he doesn't know what happened. However, Logan stole the cellphone from one of his abductors and recognized Weevil's voice as the orchestrator of his kidnapping.

Happenings

• Getting Cut Out: Weevil is looking less and less like the leader of the PCH gang as he finds that someone is selling coke without him knowing and that the star witness in Felix's trial is a puppet of a rival gang.
• The Letter: Duncan finally opens the letter he found at Meg's home from the previous episode and apparently finds something shocking in the contents. It is unknown what this is.

• Duncan: Duncan has been having nightmares about Meg and Veronica, often portraying Veronica as a darker person.

• 2x01 - Normal Is the Watchword: Butters first showed his disdain for the general school population in the first episode of the second season.

Allusions and References

• Q: In the James Bond series, Bond receives his various gadgets from Q, the head of the Q Branch. Like M, Q is a job position standing for "Quartermaster." This role has been most prominently played by Desmond Llewelyn and John Cleese. Q is responsible for all of the things that Bond employs during his missions that are on a technological level. In this allusion, Mac is Q and Veronica is Bond.

Mac: I don't mind being the Q to your Bond but...

• Nip/Tuck: Nip/Tuck is a medical drama on FX that particularly focuses on plastic surgeons. However, the series typically also goes into the lives of the surgeons and focuses on how their personal lives fall apart under the stress of greed, lust, envy and crime. The criminal aspect of the series is especially poignant in this allusion.

Logan: Any news on Nip/Schmuck?

• Star Wars: The line 'Help me Obi-Wan Kenobi; you're my only hope!' is from Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, when part of a hologram message from Princess Leia that's stored on an old droid called R2-D2 is accidentally heard by Luke Skywalker instead of its intended recipient Obi-Wan Kenobi. Later the full message is related to Kenobi, asking for help in keeping the rebellion alive by bringing the droid to her father so he can find the important information hidden in the droid's memory. The plea ends with the line 'Help me Obi-Wan Kenobi; you're my only hope!'.

Logan: Help me Mars-Wan Kenobi; you're my only hope!
