Veronica Mars is a mystery crime drama that originated on UPN before moving to The CW after UPN merged with The WB. The series stars the titular character, Veronica Mars as a teenager with a knack for mystery solving, which is largely attributed to her father, Keith, a private investigator and former sheriff for the town. In the fictional southern California town of Neptune, Veronica struggles against a crowd of "09ers" while slowly moving closer to solving whatever mystery catches her eye.

The first two seasons follow the same general format. Each season has a overarching mystery storyline which most episodes touch on to varying degrees. The premiere and finale are typically entirely devoted to the major mysteries. The remaining episodes split the focus with a minor mystery of the week story, usually from a student who hires Veronica. In the third season, to revitalize the series, there were two major arcs which lasted for nine and six episodes respectively, followed by a series of purely standalone episodes. The series also switched locales, as Veronica graduated and went to college between seasons two and three.

The series has received positive critical response and has developed a devoted cult fan base, but has suffered from lackluster ratings overall. During the weeks leading up to the 2007-2008 television season upfronts, it was uncertain whether or not the series would return for a fourth season on The CW, as many other more popular shows like 7th Heaven had been initially cut from the merged line-up. Rumors began to arise during March 2007 reporting that the series had been cancelled by The CW, but creator Rob Thomas insisted that those rumors were not true. Although a quasi-spinoff was proposed for the fourth season where Veronica would act as a fledgling FBI agent just out of the academy, The CW ultimately decided not to renew the show.

Following the cancellation of the show, Thomas and Kristen Bell wanted to do a feature film adaptation, but Warner Bros. decided not to pursue that option, but the constant teasing of a film over the next six years kept the idea alive. On March 13, 2013, they launched a fundraising campaign on Kickstarter to help fund the movie, setting a goal of $2 million, that goal being reached in less than 10 hours, reaching a total of $5.7 million. The Veronica Mars film is currently scheduled to be released in select AMC theaters on March 14, 2014.

As of January 9, 2014, all of Veronica Mars is available to stream on Amazon Instant Video exclusively for Amazon Prime subscribers. On January 15, 2014, The CW announced at the Television Critics Association that Thomas will be launching a Veronica Mars digital spinoff comedy series on CW Seed. The show's premise will revolve around actor Ryan Hansen's attempts to secure a Dick Casablancas spinoff and will consist of roughly eight 10-minute episodes.

On September 20, 2018, Hulu announced they would revive the series for a fourth and final season.
