Walt Disney Television
Walt Disney Television is the subsidiary of The Walt Disney Company which oversees its television operations, including those of ABC Signature (formerly the original Touchstone Television and ABC Studios), 20th Television (formerly 20th Century Fox Television) and the current Touchstone Television (formerly Fox 21 Television Studios). As Walt Disney Pictures Television Division, it was originally Disney's first production company exclusively for TV shows. Prior to 1983, television productions (such as The Wonderful World of Disney, The Mickey Mouse Club, Zorro and others, were produced under the parent banner (then being Walt Disney Productions).
During its first years, Walt Disney Television produced series for the fledging Disney Channel, which began broadcast the same year Walt Disney Television was established. Although Disney began a larger scale television production in the mid 1980s, most series were handled through the original Touchstone Television, founded in 1985.
In 2003, the Walt Disney Television brand was discontinued, although Walt Disney Television Animation lives on as a separate business arm. In 2005 Disney established It's a Laugh Productions, which produces most live-action shows for the Disney cable networks.
Walt Disney Television was relaunched on March 20, 2019 as the successor to the Disney-ABC Television Group (which was originally established on March 18, 1985 as Capital Cities/ABC Inc.) upon Disney's acquisition of selected assets of 21st Century Fox.
