Winx Club — Season One

More Than High School is the second episode of the first season of Winx Club, and the second episode overall.

Bloom enters Alfea under an assumed name, and the girls meet the senior witches of Cloud Tower.

Plot Overview

Bloom is excited to go to Alfea, but only magic beings can pass through the barrier. Therefore, Bloom's parents can't come in. Strangely, Kiko can pass through. Stella sends Bloom's parents back home.

Principal Griselda is checking the list of enrolled students. After threatening to turning someone she couldn't find on the list into an iguana, Bloom gets scared. Stella tells Bloom about Varanda of Vallisto, who never showed up, and Bloom enters under that name.

Griselda explains the rules of Alfea, and introduces the students to Headmistress Faragonda. Bloom and Stella meet their roommates Musa, Tecna, and Flora. During this, we find out Stella blew up the potions lab last year trying to come up with a new shade of pink. The girls all go out for pizza.

While they're out, Bloom attempts to call her parents, but her cell phone doesn't work here. Tecna lends her a phone card to use an interdimensional phone. During the call, Bloom sees Knut and hangs up, then goes to spy on him. Knut tells Icy, Darcy, and Stormy that he saw Stella, then Darcy spots Bloom. Bloom can't use her powers well, and gets frozen by Icy, since fairies can't last long under ice.

Tecna, Musa, Flora, and Stella go to check on Bloom and see the witches. Stella uses a magic spell to get them all away, including Bloom. Stella accidentally reveals who Bloom really is, and they all go back to Alfea. Bloom tells Griselda and Faragonda the truth, but they let her stay anyway because it took a lot of courage to speak up like that. However, all the magic beings disappeared from Earth a long time ago. Faragonda suspects there's more to Bloom than meets the eye.

Behind the Scenes

Dub Edits

• Alfea Slide Globe: The "Alfea Slide Globe" Stella had in the beginning does not exist in the original. In the original, she merely had her hand out.
• The Rules of Alfea: When trying to accept Eleanor, Griselda originally just asks if she is nervous. In the dub, there's a rule that anyone not on the list gets turned into an iguana. Griselda also adds a few more rules to her explanation.
• Overlapping: Stella's dialogue of explaining the three schools to Bloom is changed to her telling her what Winx is, since she already explained it to Bloom in the previous episode in the 4Kids version.
• Plants Can't Talk: Flora's plant only talks in the 4Kids version, even though in the original, Flora refers to it as a talking plant.
• We're Not a Team Yet: A scene with Bloom and the girls deciding on the name "Winx Club" is cut from this episode, and saved for a later episode.

Terminology Changes

• Varanda is from Callisto in the original, but in the dub she is from Vallisto.
• The three witches are called the Trix in the original, but the dub only seems to call them the senior witches.
• Stella shouts "Solaria!" in the original when she uses her ring/scepter, but in the dub she says, "Sun Power!"

Deleted Scenes

• A scene where Faragonda introduces herself is cut, before she explains the rules.
• A scene where Griselda looks at the girls suspiciously as they leave Alfea is cut.

Allusions and References

4Kids version

• When Stella sends Bloom's parents home, she says, "Transportus Homeus!" A possible reference to the Harry Potter series. She also says, "Get us out of here-us!" when escaping the witches. In the original, she merely says, "Have a nice trip!" when sending Bloom's parents home.

Last year she destroyed the potions laboratory with an unauthorized magic spell. This brings me to the second rule... No unsupervised magic at any time! (coughs)
  Bloom: You really did that?
  Stella: I was trying to create a new shade of pink!

• Plant: Can't a plant get a break around here?

• Bloom: Anyway, I'm Bloom.
  Stella: Bloom?
  Bloom: Uh, what I meant was, Bloom is a name I like alot, but it's not my name. Actually, my real name is... (backs out a bit and reads sign) Varanda of... of Vallisto!

• Tecna: You are quite infamous.
  Musa: That's the word on the street. Yo, if you plan to blow up more stuff, let us know ahead so we can bounce. (everyone laughs)
  Stella: It was in the name of fashion. I don't regret it.

• Icy: I hate to be a total witch about it, but I'm very quickly running out of patience.

• Stormy: I got a flash for you fairies... a lightning flash!

• Stella: It's okay, you could have survived at least another 15 minutes in that ice. You know, considering you're from Earth and all, you did outstandingly splendid, Bloom. You're so brave!
  Tecna, Musa, and Flora: (in unison) Stella?!
  Flora: Why did you just call her Bloom and say that she's from Planet Earth?
  Stella: Oh right... There might be some tiny minor details we need to fill you in on... Look, I'll give you the whole scoop on the way back to Alfea!
  (Bloom laughs)

• Faragonda: I didn't think there were any magic beings left on Earth...
  Griselda: Me neither... I thought they all disappeared centuries ago.
  Faragonda: Well then, who is Bloom?

• Griselda: This school will be your home for the next five years. But, this home can cease to be yours at any moment. The rules of this institution are based on discipline. Disregard these rules and I'll personally escort you to the front gate! This is not a magician's school, you are not here to learn Hocus Pocus. Consequently, you may not use your magic in the hallways or other common areas. In fact, the only place you may display your powers is in your classroom under teacher's supervision. Is that clear, Princess Stella? Thanks to her antics, the potions laboratory will not be accessible until next month at the earliest. Now I think you know what not to do if you wish to stay... Eh?
  Bloom: You did that?
  Stella: So? My father paid for all the damages...

• Faragonda: Okay, enough with the boring stuff. Feel free to explore your surroundings. But be very careful. There are dangers lurking about.
  Stella: "Stay away from the witches of Cloud Tower". Listen, that's what's coming up.
  Faragonda: Stay away from the witches of Cloud Tower.

• Bloom: Um, my name's Bloom.
  Stella: Ahem, Bloom?
  Bloom: I mean, yes, Bloom is a name I like alot, but it's not my name. In fact, um, my real name is... (backs out a bit and reads sign) Varanda of Callisto!

• Tecna: I've heard about you.
  Musa: Me too. By the way, before you blow up your room, give us time to duck and cover, okay? (everyone laughs)
  Stella: It was just an accident, if you really wanna know.
  Tecna: An accident that got you expelled? How did you manage to get readmitted?
  Stella: Well, the truth is, they couldn't do without someone as gorgeous as me.

• Stella: Bloom, are you alright? It's okay, you're safe now. You know, Bloom, for an Earthling, I must admit, you did really well. You were really brave...
  Tecna, Musa, and Flora: (in unison) Stella?!
  Flora: Is there anything we should know about Bloom of Callisto?
  Stella: Uh, well, I... might have been fibbing a bit about Bloom's background. I'll explain everything on our way back to Alfea.
  (Bloom laughs)

• Faragonda: I didn't think there were any fairies left on Earth...
  Griselda: Me neither... I thought they'd all disappeared centuries ago.
  Faragonda: Well then, who is Bloom?

  Bloom: The Winx! Us! I mean, if we're gonna be a group, we should have a name! Don't you think?
  Tecna: Actually, it's not a bad idea. A name is good for quick reference.
  Stella: It's true! The three witches are the Trix, and we could be called something like... The Super Five! The Stella Five! Ooh, I got it! The Aerie Fairies!
  Musa: Uh, the what?
  Stella: The Aerie Fairies! It's short, it's sweet, it rhymes... what's wrong? You don't like it, Musa?
  Musa: Nah, sounds terrible.
  Flora: I vote for Winx!
  Tecna and Musa: (in unison) Me too!
  Bloom: Perfect! Because, you see, I've already come up with the logo! Simple, yet catchy!
  Stella: This looks fantastic!
  Tecna: Yes, but, uh, what does Winx mean?
  Bloom: Nothing, just Winx!
