Plot Overview

This episode introduces us to the infamous Eagle.He has called afew of his Brood together in Monteray,Spanish California.His purpose is to make Southern California Headquarters for his Operations.He will send two members of his Brood,Quintana,and Fuentes to secretly take delivery of Gunpowder.The Eagle is well aware of Zorro constantly interfering with his plans.He tells his subordinants that if Zorro should stand in his way,he too will be marked for death.Later,at the Quartel,Captain Toledano receives an urgent message.He is to leave,and take charge of a Fort Base that is running short of Gunpowder.He tells his wife Raquel this that he must leave,but promises that he will send for her as soon as arrangements can be made.He sends for Sergeant Garcia,and informs him that he will have to take charge as acting Commandante.Toledano as he is preparing to leave talks to Diego,to ask if he would look after his wife while he is away.He feels that he can trust Diego more than any other Man at the Pueblo.Diego says yes,and will look after Raquel.As Toledano bids his wife,Sergeant Garcia,and Diego good-bye,Quintano,and Fuentes arrive.Sergeant Garcia as is his usual duty is to question newcomers to the Pueblo.He is businesslike in his approach.But,when he learns that the two newcomers have purchased the Tavern,he becomes a different person.He welcomes the men as if they were Kings.Garcia figures that he will get free drinks at the Tavern.Sometime later,another message for the Commandant arrives.This message arries while Diego is talking to Raquel.Since Sergeant Garcia is acting Commandant,he should receive the message.Diego goes to fetch Garcia.After Diego leaves,Raquel opens the envelope,reads the note,and then writes another.She then discards the real letter,and seals her letter inside the envelope.When Sergeant Garcia arrives back in his Office,he opens,and reads the note.He learns that the stolen Gunpowder has been recovered,and that all checkpoints are to discontinued.This would be good news to Garcia if he hadn't noticed how different the ink on the envelope was from the letter.This makes Diego who is with him when the letter is read...suspicious.Diego advises Garcia to check for more Wagons coming into Los Angelos.Diego dons his Zorro Custume,and along with Bernardo keeps watch for anything that looks suspicious.They spot two men riding in a Wagon,one carrying a rifle,supposely guarding a Wagon full of Hay.This is indeed suspicious.Before Zorro can do anything to expose what he believes the Wagon containing the stolen Gunpowder,Sergeant Garcia arrives.Zorro,and Bernardo make hasty retreats.The Wagon does indeed contain the stolen Gunpowder.However,the Barrels are marked as Wine,as a deception to anyone getting curious about the Barrels.Sergeant Garcia,and his lancers gives the men with the Wagon an escort back to the Quartel.They are even a small of Wine as a thank you for helping safeguard the Barrels,and helping the new Tavern Owners bring in the Barrels.Zorro knowing that the Barrel containing the stolen Gunpowder quickly replaces the Barrels with Barrels of Brandy.This fact is unknown to both Quantana,and Fuentes.When they catch Sergeant Garcia,and Corporal Reyes in the Tavern Cellar,they fear that they will discover the Gunpowder,and decide to eliminate them.Fortunately,the two Soldiers discover only Brandy.Quantana,and Fuentes are surprised that the Barrels which was supposed to be Gunpowder were switched with Brandy.All four men are even more surprised to find that Zorro leaving his trademark Z was there.Sergeant Garcia gets a feeling of happiness that he feels for once he has outwitted Zorro.He had felt that Zorro was trying to steal the Wine earlier,and again in the Cellar,and was stopped by Garcia.

Notes

Anyone watching this episode would wonder why did Raquel(Captain Toledanos wife) would write a phony note,seal it up,and discard the real letter.The answer comes in the following episode.
