Game Show Career

Memorable Moments

Bill had many memorable moments as host of the original Price Is Right; among them included an elephant that was brought out as a promotion for the Barnum and Bailey Circus. On live television (on the East Coast), the beast relieved itself on stage. As the audience howled with laughter, Bill quipped "Tune in Monday when we'll give equal time to the Democratic Party!"

In 1960, contestant Richard Jones was the returning champion. He was not on the week before because the show hosted a panel of honeymooners. Jones said "I'm glad I wasn't on it because I didn't get a damn--er, darn one right!" Bill never batted an eye; after the audience laughter ebbed, he quipped "And you're not off to a good start tonight, either!"

In 1982, Bill made his only appearance on Bob Barker's edition of The Price Is Right (his first Price appearance since the original went off in 1965) to promote his new CBS show Child's Play.
