Season Four of Bleach premiered on January 17, 2006. The season, entitled "The Bount", introduces a group of humans who consume souls in order to increase their power and lengthen their lives.
Unlike the previous three seasons, "The Bount" storyline is not directly adapted from the manga series. The story was created by the anime producers in order to give the manga enough lead time before returning to the main storyline. As a result, none of the plots, themes or characters introduced in this and the next season have any particular impact on the story, although the characters introduced (specifically Noba, Kurōdo, and Lirin) do continue to appear throughout the series.
The season initially aired from January 17, 2006 to August 1, 2006 in Japan on TV Tokyo. Four pairs of episodes were originally aired as hour-long specials: 68/69, 73/74, 75/76 and 84/85 (the last due to broadcast of the 2006 World Cup). The episodes later began airing in English on Adult Swim beginning May 17, 2008 and ending November 23, 2008.
