Bruno Heller is an English screenwriter and creator of the HBO drama Rome, the CBS drama The Mentalist, and the FOX drama. Gotham, which is based on the Batman character James Gordon.

Biography

Heller was born in London, England to German Jewish screenwriter Lukah Heller and Caroline (née Carter). Heller graduated from the University of Sussex in Brighton. He was a union soundman working in England in the 1980s when film sets were staunchly hierarchical. While working on a series of films about Englan's infamous Miners' Strike, Heller met well-regarded Portuguese director Eduardo Guedes. Both men teamed up for what would be Heller's first writing credit, the 1994 motion picture PAX starring Amanda Plummer.

He left England to head for New York, where he would meet his wife, Miranda, at a disco. Five years later, he moved to Los Angeles, where he got to work for various TV dramas, including USA shows Touching Evil and The Huntress, but it was Rome that would gave him his breakthrough. After Rome's cancellation for its high costs, he went on to create The Mentalist.

In September 2012, Heller sold a legal drama called The Advocates to CBS, but was later passed in May 2013. He is currently the creator and showrunner for the FOX drama Gotham, which is based on the Batman series and follows the origins of Gotham City's various villains.
