Basic Information

Ian is a travelling companion of Doctor. He often takes the initiative, many times at odds with the Doctor's wishes. Occasionally the Doctor will refer to him as "Chesterman" or some other mangled pronunciation of his name as a form of grudging respect.

Ian will tell people just what he thinks, such as when he called the Doctor a fool for faking the problem with the fluid link in the episode The Daleks.

History

Ian Chesterton was a science teacher at the Coal Hill School in London [in 1963]. He became one of the Doctor's travelling companions, while looking after a student (Susan) in the episode An Unearthly Child. After he and Miss Wright pushed their way into the TARDIS, the Doctor couldn't just let them go, or they would tell stories. Susan as it turns out was the granddaughter of the Doctor.

By the time they encounter the Sensorites, he and Barbara have clearly come to enjoy the companionship and adventures they have shared with Susan and the Doctor.

He and Barbara are finally able to return to Earth in 1965 in story 016 - The Chase.
