Plot Overview

A year after Madison found the others, they've built a small community in a baseball stadium. While a mission finds a potential new member, a threat soon rears forward.

Happenings

• Madison and the others have been at the baseball stadium for at least a year. They've built a community of about four dozen.

• It's revealed the numbered flags were put by a small band of survivors who've rounded up the dead, with the numbers corresponding to how many are contained.

• The group, appropriately called the Vultures, pose no immediate danger as they simply wait out settlements for the inevitable and take their things.

• There's an unspecified gap in time between the arrival of the Vultures and when Alicia and the others find Althea, Dorie, and Morgan.

• Alicia and the others take Althea, Dorie, and Morgan so they can show them were they got the flag they found.

• Madison took Strand back despite his deal with the Proctors, something he doesn't understand and has yet to ask Madison.

• Nick has not been outside the stadium for some time.

Mel: People always say that. You see, we're not taking anything from anyone. Anyone who's alive, anyway. You see, look, I've had this conversation a hundred times. We know that you're good people. Yeah? Look, 27 machine guns, six rifles, 14 handguns, six dozen hand grenades, and until recently, a great crop yield, but there is a natural cycle to a place like this. Okay? And yours is about to run out. So there's two ways this can go: either you give us your stuff and live. I mean, hell, you can - you can join us, you could become one of us. Or we wait for you all to die, trying to make things work. But either way, I end up with that gun on your hip and whatever else I want. That's not a threat; that's just the way it goes. Oh. I'm Mel, by the way.

(Mel offers his hand, but Madison doesn't take it)

Madison: We're not going anywhere.

Mel: Yeah, I've heard that before, too.

Madison: We've lived like you. Moving from place to place, doing whatever it took to make it. We're not going back to that life.

Mel: You saying you're better than us?

Madison: I'm saying we found a better way.

Mel: Because you live in there in those walls, you don't have to do the sorts of things we have to do? Let me tell you something. You just haven't been tested yet. But you're about to be. You change your mind, we'll be out here waiting.
