Hong Kong Phooey is an animated comedy that aired on ABC.

Penrod "Penry" Pooch is the well-meaning but bumbling janitor of a police station where he answers to bombastic Sgt. Flint and self-proclaimed eye candy Rosemary, the telephone operator. Upon hearing about a crime from Rosemary, Penry ducks into a secret compartment and upon a quick change in a file cabinet becomes Hong Kong Phooey, martial arts superhero.

Martial arts is actually a stretch, as he consults his Hong Kong book of Kung Fu, and any moves he tries to apply on his adversaries is at best non-existent. It's Phooey's pet cat Spot who usually ties the bad guys up in a neat package, and Spot is beside himself when Phooey takes the credit for capturing the crooks.

Scatman Crothers, previously heard in 1970 as Meadowlark on The Harlem Globetrotters voices Penry and Hong Kong Phooey. Joe E. Ross, Sgt. Flint's voice, was previously Botch on Help! It's The Hair Bear Bunch! in 1971. Hong Kong Phooey would reappear in 1977 as a member of the Scooby Doobies on Scooby's All-Star Laff-a-Lympics.

The series' final episode, Comedy Cowboys, featured characters who were groomed to get their own series--Mystery Maverick, Honcho, and Posse Impossible but only Posse Impossible (which is how they were billed in the episode) was greenlit as a segment of Hanna-Barbera's 1977 series CB Bears. A live action/CGI feature film of Hong Kong Phooey has been in development since 2009. Eddie Murphy has been tapped to voice Phooey in the film.
