KMOV is the CBS affiliate for St. Louis, Missouri, broadcasting over the air on digital channel 24 and displayed as virtual 4.
KMOV signed on in 1954 as KWK with CBS as primary affiliation (having taken it from WTVI, now FOX affiliate KTVI) and ABC as secondary. CBS originally planned to start up a network-owned station on channel 11 but wound up buying KWK. They changed the call to KMOX-TV, paired up with its AM radio sister KMOX.
CBS sold KMOX-TV to Viacom in 1986, and its call was changed to KMOV. Belo would buy KMOV in 1994 after Viacom divested itself of its stations group to focus on the upstart network UPN. In 2013, Gannett announced it was buying the Belo stations, but since they already own NBC affiliate KSDK (a company cannot own more than one high-rated station in a given market), Sander Media was about to buy KMOV and Gannett would operate KMOV under a shared services agreement until Meredith stepped in and bought the station. KMOV was part of a duopoly in St. Louis with CW affiliate KPLR/channel 11, which Meredith bought from Tribune while Tribune was in the process being acquired by Sinclair Broadcasting (now canceled). KPLR was subsequently divested to Nexstar, making it a duopoly with KTVI. KMOV is now owned by Gray Television.
KMOV transmits at 1 million watts of power; in the event of an outage, they have an auxiliary transmitter which broadcasts at 412,000 watts.
