A Tale of Two Cities

Jack, Kate and Sawyer begin to discover what they are up against as prisoners of "The Others."

See A Tale of Two Cities for full details.

Jack

Sarah is seeking a divorce from Jack, but Jack is obsessed with discovering the identity of the man Sarah is seeing. He offers to let her have everything in exchange for the identity of the man, but she refuses. Using a list of numbers from Sarah's cell phone, Jack calls through them one at a time in an effort to find the man's number. His father discovers what he's doing and tells him he needs to stop as his relationship with Sarah is over. Jack refuses as he wants to know what the man has that he doesn't. One of the numbers Jack tries is his father's and Jack asks why Sarah would have his number. He's told it's because she was worried him. Christian knows something about obsessive behavior and can see it going on with Jack, but Jack retorts that being a drunk is not obsessive. Not believing his father's story, Jack follows him to a hotel and confronts him. Christian points out that he's just attending an alcoholics anonymous meeting, but Jack persists. The meeting's moderator tries to ask Jack to join them, but Jack demands to know what his father said about his marriage. He then tells the group that Christian manages his own marriage with alcohol. The moderator replies that Christian has been sober for fifty days, but Jack suggests his father managed to turn that corner by having a new lady friend - Sarah. Taken aback, Christian tells him to let it go, and Jack attacks him. Jack is taken to jail and eventually bailed out by Sarah. She tells him that his father called her, so drunk she could barely understand him, and told her to help Jack. Jack sees Sarah's boyfriend across the street and demands to know his name. Sarah tells him it doesn't matter who he is; it only matters who Jack isn't.

The Glass Ballerina

Sayid's plan to locate Jack places Sun and Jin's lives in grave danger. Meanwhile, Kate and Sawyer are forced to work in harsh conditions by their captors, and Henry makes a very tempting offer to Jack that may prove difficult to refuse.

See The Glass Ballerina for full details.

Sun

As a young child, Sun accidentally drops a glass ballerina which shatters on the floor. Her father discovers the mess and confronts Sun about it. Sun claims the maid broke the glass ballerina and maintains the lie even after her father warns her that, if she's telling the truth, he'll be forced to fire the maid. Years later, Sun is sleeping with Jae Lee and is troubled. She tells him she can't continue their relationship as she's married to Jin. But Jae shows her a pearl necklace and tells her he doesn't want to share her anymore. He tries to convince Sun to go to America as her English is excellent, but Sun's father enters the hotel room and discovers Sun inside. He demands she get dressed and storms out. After Jae's death, Sun watches his funeral from a distance when her father appears and tells her she shouldn't be there. Asked why he's there, he tells Sun that he does business with Jae's father. He idly tells Sun he heard Jae jumped from a balcony and must have great shame to have done so. He orders Sun to go home to her husband. Asked if he'll ever tell Jin about her relationship with Jae, he tells her it's not his place to tell Jin.

Jin

Mr. Paik summons Jin to his office and shows him a picture of Jae Lee. He informs him that Jae has been stealing from him and Jin is to "put an end to it". Realizing that Mr. Paik wants him to kill Jae, Jin refuses and quits. Mr. Paik tells Jin that Jae has shamed him and, since Jin is now his son, Jae has also shamed Jin. He asks Jin to restore their family's honor. Jin returns home where Sun is nervous about not knowing if her father has told Jin about her affair with Jae. Jin tells her that her father wants him to deliver a message, but Sun tries to convince him otherwise; they can run away. Jin disagrees, telling her he does it for her and that her father expects it. He does it because that's what it takes to be married to her. Sun asks him what it takes to be married to him, angering Jin. He leaves to deliver the message. Jin ambushes Jae outside his room, thoroughly beating him up inside. Holding a gun to Jae's head, Jin is unable to pull the trigger as Jae pleads for his life. Jin tells Jae to leave the country and never return. If he does return and try to make contract, Jin will finish what he started. Jin gets back into his car outside the hotel when Jae's body lands on the hood with the pearl necklace in his hand that he wanted Sun to have.

Further Instructions

The fates of Locke, Eko and Desmond are revealed after the implosion of the hatch, while Hurley returns to the beach camp to tell the tale of what happened when he, Jack, Kate and Sawyer encountered "The Others."

See Further Instructions for full details.

Locke

While driving in the rain, Locke picks up a hitchhiker who introduces himself as Eddie. Locke takes Eddie to supper at the commune where he lives. Eddie inquires about a nearby structure and Locke tells him it's a sweat lodge where you meditate and find out if you're a farmer or a hunter. Eddie asks Locke which one he is, but Locke only smiles at the question. Locke introduces Eddie to Mike and Jan, who in turn introduce him to everyone gathered for supper. After six weeks at the commune, Eddie is curious about a greenhouse he still isn't allowed to go near. He's noticed all the fertilizer going inside and wants in with whatever they group is trying to blow up. Locke laughs at the idea and says he'll talk with Mike and Jan. He later meets up with the two inside the greenhouse, which is full of marijuana plants, but discovers Eddie is actually a cop fresh out of the police academy who's been gathering evidence. Locke tries to calm them down, telling them it's not too late for him to fix the problem. He takes Eddie out hunting and confronts him, wondering if the police knew it'd be him driving the truck. Eddie confirms Locke's suspicions; Locke was chosen as he wasn't at the commune long, didn't have a criminal record and the police psych profile on him says that he was "amenable for coercion". Eddie doesn't think that Locke will shoot him; he isn't a murderer, but a farmer. Locke disagrees, telling Eddie he was a hunter. Eddie walks away.

Everyman for Himself

Sawyer discovers just how far his captors will go to thwart any plans of escape he and Kate might have, and Jack is called upon to scrub up in order to save the life of one of "The Others." Meanwhile, Desmond's behavior begins to perplex the survivors when he starts construction on an unknown device.

See Everyman for Himself for full details.

Sawyer

At a prison, Sawyer notices an inmate getting beat up and learns the guy is called Munson. It's rumored Munson ripped off the government for $10,000,000, but the government hasn't found the money yet. He motions to the Warden and notes that Munson would be a dead man if the Warden didn't keep breaking up the fights. Later, Sawyer approaches Munson while on cleaning detail. He points out to Munson the special treatment he's been getting and tells him the Warden is doing it to get the ten million: butter him up and then use his wife against him. Sawyer doesn't want the Warden to get that money after the Warden made his life a living hell. Waiting in a visitation room, Sawyer watches as Munson argues with his wife over something before his attention turns to his visitor, Cassidy Phillips - the woman he performed a long con on. She refers to him as Sawyer, but he tells her his name is James Ford and she should know it too since she got it right when she pressed charges. Cassidy shows Sawyer a picture of a baby girl and tells him that she's his daughter, Clementine. She tells him they're living in a little place in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and thought that he might writer her a letter. Upset, Sawyer tells Cassidy he has no daughter and leaves. Later, Munson talks with Sawyer and tells him he was right. He asks Sawyer to move the money for him as his wife has hired a private investigator to find the money. Sawyer is later brought to see the Warden and a Treasury Department official. He reveals to them the exact location of the money. The Warden informs Sawyer that, as agreed, the remaining six years of his sentence will be commuted. The Treasury official tells Sawyer that, after the money is recovered and confirmed, he'll receive his "commission". Sawyer asks that his commission be sent to a new account at any back in Albuquerque under the name Clementine Phillips, but the money can't ever be traced back to him.

The Cost of Living

A delirious Eko wrestles with demons from his past, while Locke and some of the other castaways head back to The Pearl — one of the DHARMA Initiative's island stations — hoping to find a computer that they can use to locate Jack, Kate and Sawyer. Meanwhile, Jack doesn't know whom to trust when two of "The Others" seem at odds with one another.

See The Cost of Living for full details.

Eko

As a young boy in Nigeria, Eko breaks into a storage shed for food and gives his younger brother Yemi some food. As Yemi hungrily digs into the packaging, a nun appears and takes the two boys into the church. The nun orders Eko into a confessional and to confess to the priest that he has stolen. Eko tells her that his brother was hungry, but the nun tells him he has sinned and that hunger does not matter. After Yemi's death at the airstrip, the Nigerian soldiers return Eko to Yemi's church. Inside, a woman and her child approach Eko, asking him where Father Yemi is. Eko tells her that Yemi was called away suddenly to an emergency at a refugee camp and he is his replacement. The woman introduces herself as Amina, a worker at the clinic, and her son Daniel is an altar boy at the church. She asks Eko if Yemi is still going to London in a week to continue his studies, but Eko tells her he is replacing him for the trip, too. Later, the sound of gunfire is heard outside the church and Eko investigates. A warlord, Emeka, and his men demand to see Father Yemi. Amina tells Emeka that the shipment is late and they'll receive shipments of the vaccine from the Red Cross and give 80% to him in exchange for his protection. Emeka hopes Eko will honor their prior arrangement with Yemi, but Eko tells him he's not afraid and walks away. In response, Emeka kills a bystander and warns Eko he'll return for the vaccine. Afterwards, Eko inquires about the vaccine shipments. He learns from Amina that they come every six months and the vaccines fetch a high price on the black market. Before Father Yemi arrived they got nothing, and now they owe what vaccine they do get to his work. Amina tells Eko that he reminds her of Yemi, and that Eko is a good man like Yemi. Eko leaves the church and meets with a trader to make a deal to sell the vaccine before he leaves the country. Emeka and his men later return and find Eko alone in the church. He tells Eko that he learned of the vaccine that Eko is trying to sell, but will only cut off his hands instead of taking his life. As Emeka swings with his machete, Eko breaks free from his binds and uses the machete to cut down his attackers. Emeka begs for his life, but Eko kills him. Soaked in the blood of Emeka and his men, Eko exits the church while brandishing the machete and a gun. Leaving the church for his trip to London, Daniel asks Eko if Eko's a bad man since his mother says he is. Eko tells him that only God knows. Outside the vaccine shipment arrives, but Amina tells Eko that the men he killed will only be replaced by other men like them. The villagers board up Yemi's church as they can no longer use it due to Eko's killing. Amina tells Eko that he'll be judged one day for what he did, that he owes God for every life he's taken, that he owes Yemi a church.

I Do

Jack makes a decision regarding Ben's offer, Kate feels helpless when it looks like an angry Pickett is going to make good on his threat to kill Sawyer, and Locke discovers a hidden message that may guide him through the next steps of his journey to unlocking the secrets of the island.

See I Do for full details.

Kate

Kate enters a motel room with a bag, opening the box inside to reveal wedding veil. There is a knock out the door with a man identifying himself as the police. Kate opens the door, revealing a Miami-Date police officer who asks her if she wants to get it on. Kate jumps into his arms the the two enter her motel room. As they lie in bed together, Kate tells her fiancé - Kevin Callis - that it's bad luck to see the bride before the wedding. It's twelve hours before Kevin and Monica (Kate's assumed name) are going to get married. Kevin reassures her that, even though their relationship has been moving fast, he loves her. Just before the wedding ceremony, Kevin's mother gives Kate a necklace that she had hoped to pass on to her daughter on her wedding day. But, since she doesn't have a daughter, Kate will do. At the ceremony, the minister tells all those gathered that, when he first met Kate, he was struck by her honesty and devotion to Kevin. Kevin told him what he loved most about Kate was that "what you see is what you get." The two are married. Some time later, Kate calls Edward Mars, the Marshal who's been pursuing her. She tells him that she doesn't want to run anymore. Agent Mars asks her who the guy is and if he knows who she really is. She tells him that he loves the guy and asks him to let her go, but Mars tells her if she she really stays put and really stays down, he'll stop chasing her. After a long silence, Mars tells her they both know that's not going to happen. Six months after the wedding, Kevin buys tickets for them to go on their honeymoon. He tells her to get her passport ready, but notices there's something wrong with Kate. She tells him it's nothing. Later, Kate takes a pregnancy test and learns its negative. She takes some iced tea to Kevin, who is working on fugitive recovery reports. Kate tels him she's on the run for blowing up her father and it was only a matter of time before he found out. KEvin doesn't think it's funny, but Kate tells him it's not a joke. She says that she could nearly have been pregnant and she can't live this life anymore. She goes on to tell him her real name isn't "Monica" and that she loves him, but can't stay. Kevin tries to stop her, but staggers about on his feet. Kate tells him she drugged his iced tea so suspicion wouldn't fall on him. She puts his mother's necklace into the now unconscious Kevin's hand, kisses him and leaves.

Not in Portland

Jack is in command as the fate of Ben's life literally rests in his hands. Meanwhile, Kate and Sawyer find an ally in one of "The Others," and Juliet makes a shocking decision that could endanger her standing with her people.

See Not in Portland for full details.

Juliet

In Miami, Juliet wakes her sister up and injects her. At night, Juliet uses her key card to access the Bio-Research Building at Miami Central University. As she makes her way down a hallway she receives a phone call confirming an appointment with Dr. Richard Alpert of Mittelos Bioscience for the next day. She enters a laboratory and opens a medical refrigerator containing test sample vials. As she removes vials and places them in her purse, the lights are turned on and two people enter the room. Trying to remain hidden, Juliet's phone goes off and the man — Edmund — discovers her. Edmund introduces Juliet, his ex-wife, to his companion and suggests to Juliet that she leave. The next day, Edmund reveals to Juliet he knows she has been stealing from the lab but doesn't know who her guinea pig is. Her research could either be genius or could raise some serious ethical, and possibly criminal, concerns. However he "graciously" extends an offer to collaborate and use his reputation to quell those concerns so they can win prizes. Later in the day, Juliet attends a recruitment pitch by Dr. Alpert for Mittelos Bioscience which is based just outside of Portland. Going through the slides, Alpert explains how the employees are all happy because Mittelos is privately funded and that means freedom. He brings up a slide of a woman's womb and asks Juliet what she sees. Based on the images, Juliet deduces that the womb belongs to a 70-year-old woman, but Alpert tells her that the woman is actually 26. Juliet asks him what happened to her, but Alpert tells her that she could have complete freedom and money to find out. He believes that Juliet is special and wants her to lead a team of highly trained people. Juliet declines the offer, telling Alpert that her ex-husband wouldn't let her and wouldn't want her to have such an opportunity, and the only way he'd respond to them was if he got hit by a bus. After the interview, Juliet returns to her apartment and her sister, Rachel. She tells Rachel that the offer wasn't for her and that Portland was too far away for research that doesn't even work. But Rachel reveals to Juliet that her treatment worked — she's pregnant — and tells her that she can tell her ex-husband off. Juliet finds Edmund outside of the medical research laboratory and informs him that Rachel is pregnant. He asks for her data so he can verify the work, but Juliet tells him she's not interested in publishing it. Before Edmund can continue arguing with her he's hit by a bus. At the city morgue, Juliet identifies the body of her ex-husband. The morgue employee leaves Juliet alone to go over the required paperwork. As she breaks down and cries, Ethan Rom appears and hands her some tissues. Alpert is with him and expresses his condolences to Juliet over the loss of her ex-husband before he heads back to Portland. He introduces Ethan as one of his colleagues. Juliet remembers that, during her interview with Alpert, she wished her ex-husband would be hit by a bus. Alpert dismisses her comment, telling Juliet that she shouldn't blame herself for what happened, and claims to not remember such a comment at the interview. Alpert realizes the timing is horrible, but they're very serious about getting her to come work with them. They only want six months of her time and believe she'll be back in time for when her sister gives birth. Juliet asks him how he knows Rachel is pregnant, but Alpert merely tells her they're very thorough. Juliet asks if her sister could come with her, but Alpert tells her they're at a remote location and she wouldn't have access to the treatment she needs — they're not quite in Portland.

Flashes Before Your Eyes

A suspicious and determined Hurley enlists Charlie to help him wrangle the truth out of Desmond, who has been acting strangely ever since the implosion of the hatch.

See Flashes Before Your Eyes for full details.

Desmond

Inside The Swan, the timer has counted down past zero. Desmond retrieves the fail-safe key from his book and descends into the crawlspace underneath the geodesic dome. Making his way to the fail-safe device, Desmond inserts the key and activates it, but wakes up on the floor in his London flat in a pool of red paint after apparently having fallen from a ladder. Penelope rushes over to him with some ice for his head and asks if he's okay. Later, Penelope helps Desmond get ready for a job interview with her father, Charles Widmore. Penelope tells him he doesn't need a job from her father, but Desmond wants her father to respect him. At the interview, Widmore offers to give Desmond a job in the administrative department, but Desmond tells him he came to ask for permission to marry Penelope. Widmore pours a small glass of MacCutcheon whisky, relaying to Desmond the story of its namesake, Admiral MacCutcheon. He tells Desmond that one swallow would cost more than Desmond could make in a month and, after finishing the glass, tells him that it would be a waste to share it with him and a disgrace to MacCutcheon. Desmond will never be a great man and, as he isn't even worthy to drink Widmore's whiskey, he could never marry his daughter. Desmond leaves Widmore Industries, but finds Charlie outside playing covers of songs for money. Desmond tries to remember how he knows him, then remembers Charlie inside The Swan during the electromagnetic event. He begins to remember events that have already happened before including it raining, which it then starts raining. Desmond finds his physicist friend, Donovan, to ask him about time travel. The two go to a pub where Desmond tells him about the island and the hatches, but Donovan doesn't believe him. Donovan asks him what's going to happen next, but Desmond tells him he can only remember bits and pieces. Just then Desmond remembers what's going to happen that night: a football team is going to come back from two goals down to win and Jimmy Lennon is going to come in and hit the bartender with a cricket bat. However, events don't go as Desmond foresaw. Returning to his flat, Desmond tells Penelope how it went with her father. Penelope decides they should go celebrate him not having to suffer a job with Widmore Industries, but Desmond asks her why she loves him. She replies that it's because he's a good man. The following day, Desmond enters a shop to look at diamond rings and is helped by the shop's proprietor, Ms. Hawking. Ms. Hawking shows him a diamond ring in his price range and Desmond decides to buy it, but Ms. Hawking tells him he won't. He is supposed to have second thoughts and leave without the ring. Ms. Hawking tells Desmond that she knows his name, that she knows he doesn't ask Penelope to marry him. He breaks her heart and thus enters her father's sailing race, which puts him on the island for three years of entering the numbers into the computer until he's forced to turn the fail-safe key. Ms. Hawking tells him that, if he doesn't do those things, then every single one of them is dead. She realizes Desmond is going to be difficult and takes him outside for some chestnuts. She points out a man wearing red shoes, but simply tells Desmond she thought it was a bold fashion choice. Desmond believes that Ms. Hawking is his subconscious trying to talk him out of marrying Penny, but he's going to spend the rest of his life with her. However, Ms. Hawking tells Desmond that he isn't. Just then, scaffolding collapses and kills the man wearing red shoes. Desmond realizes that Ms. Hawking knew it was going to happen and didn't do anything to stop the man, but Ms. Hawking simply replies that it wouldn't have mattered. The universe has a way of course correcting — if she stopped the man then he would have been killed some other way the next day and if she tried to save him the next day then he would have killed another way later on. Ms. Hawking explains that it was the man's path to die, just as it is Desmond's path to go to the island. Desmond believes he can choose to do whatever he wants, but Ms. Hawking tells him that pushing the button will be the only truly great thing he will ever do. The next day Penelope meets Desmond along the River Thames. The two get their picture taken in front of a fake marina backdrop. As Penelope pays for the picture, Desmond looks at their photograph and realizes he can't go on with their relationship. Desmond tries to rationalize his decision, but Penelope tells him not to make it about what she does or does not deserve. She wants him to admit its because he's a coward. Desmond apologies, telling her that they're not supposed to be together. As Penelope walks away, Desmond takes out the engagement ring and throws it into the river. Later, at the pub, Desmond grabs a drink to celebrate making the biggest mistake in his life. Just then "Make Your Own Kind of Music" plays over the jukebox and the football team on the television comes back from two goals down — just like Desmond predicted earlier with Donovan. Desmond realizes that he's not crazy, that he was only off by a night, and that he can still change things. However, Jimmy Lennon comes in and, as Desmond tries to warn the bartender, is hit in the head with Lennon's cricket bat. He regains consciousness but finds himself naked and in the jungle of the island. Running through the jungle, Desmond discovers the imploded Swan and some items that were once inside it — including the photograph of Penelope and himself.

Stranger in a Strange Land

A power play ensues between Jack and "The Others" as Juliet's future hangs in the balance. Meanwhile, Kate, Sawyer and Karl continue on their journey away from "Alcatraz."

See Lost/Stranger in a Strange Land for full details.

Jack

In Phuket, Thailand, Jack leaves his beach hut for a short walk down the beach. He gets out a kite from his backpack, but has trouble figuring out how to put it together. A young Thai woman sees him having trouble and helps him put it together. With the kite completed, she helps him launch it into the sky. The woman introduces herself as Achara. Later the two share a meal at a Thai restaurant. A man brings out a special dish for Jack to try and, after giving it a taste, Achara tells him her brother likes him. She asks him why he doesn't know how to fly a kite and Jack tells her his father was always busy and wasn't the kite-flying type of guy. Achara stops him, telling him that she doesn't care about his father, and Jack tells her he's relieved as he's getting sick of talking about him. A Thai man comes up to Achara and hands her an envelope which she puts in her purse. Noticing Jack's quizzical look, she tells him that she has a gift. Late at night, Achara enters Jack's beach hut and slips into bed with him. Seeing a look in Jack's eyes, she asks him if there was anything he wanted to ask her. Jack tells her that, after a month of her coming in whenever she wanted, it'd be nice to find something out about her. She tells him that there are things he wouldn't understand, like her gift, and that he should stop asking questions and have fun. Later, at night, Jack secretly follows Achara through the streets of Phuket while drinking. Finally finding her place of work, Jack sees that she is a tattoo artist. However, Achara tells him that she is not a tattoo artist, rather she can see who people are — her work is not decoration, but definition — and that is her gift. Jack demands she tell him who he is, but Achara tells him he's an outsider and she's not allowed. Forcing himself on her, Achara finally tells Jack that he's a leader and a great man, but this makes him lonely, frightened and angry. Jack orders her to mark him, but Achara warns him there will be consequences. The next day, Jack leaves his beach hut for a walk when Achara's brother and a group of Thai men assault him. The man warns Jack to leave the country. As he tries to get up from the beating, Jack sees Achara in the distance, crying.

Tricia Tanaka Is Dead

Hurley's discovery of an old, wrecked car on the island leads him on a mission of hope not only for himself, but for a fellow survivor in need of some faith. Meanwhile, Kate and Sawyer reunite with their fellow castaways, but Kate is still torn about leaving Jack behind with "The Others."

See Tricia Tanaka Is Dead for full details.

Hurley

A young Hurley begins to work on a car sitting in the driveway when his father, David, walks up carrying a duffel bag. Even though the car needs a new carburettor, David hands Hurley the keys and tells him to start the car. When the car fails to start, Hurley complains about how it was stupid to try it, but David tells him having hope isn't stupid and he has to believe good things will happen; he has to make his own luck. David breaks the news to Hurley that he's leaving for some work in Vegas and won't be able to make the road trip to see the Grand Canyon. He gives Hurley a Glacier candy bar and, after Hurley protests by telling him his mom wouldn't want him to have it, tells Hurley to live a little. David leaves on his motorcycle while Carmen Reyes watches from a window. After winning the lottery, Hurley purchases the Mr. Cluck's Chicken Shack he used to work at. Tricia Tanaka, a reporter with Action 8 News, tries to interview Hurley for a puff piece, but Hurley begins talking about all the bad things that's happened to him since winning the lottery. She cuts the interview and heads inside the Mr. Cluck's to film some more, despite Hurley's superstition that something bad might happen. Hurley quizzes Randy, making sure the gas inside is off and nothing can go wrong, when a meteor strikes the Mr. Cluck's and obliterates it. Immediately heading home to his mansion, Hurley informs his mother that Tricia Tanaka is dead. He tells her it's his fault because the numbers are cursed, but Carmen slaps him. He tells Carmen he has to go to Australia as that's where the numbers came from, but Carmen tells him she can prove the numbers aren't cursed. She shows him that David, his father, has returned after 17 years. At dinner, the Reyes family are served by the Trons, a couple Hurley found at a Bennigan's and then hired as his butlers. Hurley asks his mom if she isn't the slightest bit suspicious that his father showed up after 17 years once he won the lottery. But Carmen tells him that she asked David to come as she thought Hurley needed a manly influence to stop the cursed numbers nonsense. Believing his father is only after his money, Hurley tosses the Trons a wad of money as severance pay and informs his mother he's getting rid of all his money and everything else, starting with his father. Carmen, however, tells Hurley that David is staying at the house and, after covering the ears of her golden Jesus statue, tells Hurley she has "needs". Carmen asks Hurley to show his father what he has in the garage, the car from his childhood. In the morning, David wakes Hurley up and brings him to see Lynn Karnoff, a psychic. The psychic tells Hurley that he's come into possession of a great deal of money, but it hasn't brought him happiness. She tells him darkness and great tragedy surrounds the numbers; death surrounds Hurley and more is coming. She orders Hurley to remove his clothes in order to exorcise the curse. Hurley asks her if his dad put her up to the reading, offering $10,000 if she admits it, and she does. David tries to tell Hurley that he was trying to help, but Hurley leaves. As Hurley packs for his trip to Australia, David tells him how Carmen called him about the lottery and was on his bike before she hung up. He saw the lottery winnings as he means for retirement and came home for the money, but that's not why he's talking with him now. David tells Hurley that going to Australia isn't going to break any curse, rather what Hurley needs is a little hope. He thinks Hurley should give away all the money except for enough to work on the Camaro and make that road trip to the Grand Canyon. Hurley tells David that he'll send him a postcard from Sydney and walks out.

Enter 77

Locke, Sayid and Kate investigate a strange structure and its mysterious inhabitant. Meanwhile, Sawyer competes in a ping-pong competition to get back his belongings."

See Enter 77 for full details.

Sayid

In Paris, France, Sayid is working as a cook at a resturant. A man, Sami, requests to speak with Sayid and tells him that his food is delicious. He asks Sayid where he's from but, after Sayid tells him he's from Syria, tells Sayid that he knows he's an Iraqi like himself. Sayid demands to know what Sami wants, and learns that Sami is in need of a cook and simply wants to hire him at double his pay. Accepting Sami's invitation to look at his restaurant, Sayid meets with him inside. Sami brings out his wife, Amira, to meet Sayid. She has terribly scarred arms. A man grabs Sayid's arm and Sami asks Amira if she's sure Sayid is "him." A group of men restrain Sayid and Sami knocks him unconscious. Chained in the back of the restaurant, Sayid is brought some water by Sami. He asks Sayid if he doesn't recognize one of his victims, Amira, when he was a torturer in the Republican Guard. Sayid tells the man that he has him confused with someone else. He tells Sami his real name, that he was indeed an interrogator with the Republican Guard, but he does not know Amira. He remembers the faces of all the people he's tortured, but does not know her. Sami, however, tells Sayid that his wife remembers Sayid's face so well that she recognized him from a mere glimpse while walking by the restaurant he worked at. He wants Sayid to admit to torturing Amira, or Sayid will leave the room in a bag. Sami returns with Amira, asking Sayid if he's ready to tell the truth. Sayid sticks to his story, but is beaten by Sami. He asks Sami how beating him will make him confess to something he didn't do, but Sami tells him Amira confessed to something she didn't do after Sayid poured boiling oil over her arms. Sayid refuses to confess and Sami grabs a pipe, but Amira tells him to stop for the day. Amira returns to see Sayid, holding a long-haired cat in her arms. She tells Sayid that, after she and her husband arrived in Paris, she was too frightened to leave the apartment and would only look out the window into an alley at a cat looking for scraps of food. One day, some children trapped the cat in a box and dropped firecrackers into it. She could hear the cat howling and finally had a reason to leave her apartment. She rescued the cat, and he sits with her and sleeps with her. But sometimes the cat bites her or scratches her. Amira believes he does this because sometimes he forgets he is safe, so she forgives him because she knows what it feels like to never be safe. She knows that feeling because of Sayid. Amira asks Sayid to show her the respect of acknowledging what he did to her and that he remembers her. Sayid tells her that he remembers her, that the faces of the people he's tortured haunt him ever since he left Iraq, and apologizes for what he did to her. Amira forgives Sayid, and tells him that she'll tell Sami that she made a mistake and Sayid is not the man who tortured her. After being asked why she is letting him go, Amira tells Sayid that they are all capable of doing what the children did to her cat, but she will not be that person.

Claire

Claire regains consciousness in the driver's seat of a car; a cut above her eye and broken glass littered throughout her hair. She sees a woman laying in the road, and is forced to exit the wrecked vehicle through the broken windshield and over the crumpled front end. Rushing over to the woman, Claire tries to get her — her mother — to wake up as a crowd of bystanders gather around her. At the hospital, a doctor stitches up the cut over Claire's eye and Officer Barnes questions Claire about the accident. She tells the officer she was driving when a truck forced her off the road. He asks her if her father had been notified, but Claire tells him her father died when she was two. Officer Barnes apologizes and goes on to tell her the truck driver is fine and told him she hit the truck. Claire denies the allegation, but can't remember how fast she was traveling when the accident occurred. Officer Barnes informs her these questions are standard procedure in the event of a fatality, but Claire tells him her mother is in surgery and the accident isn't her fault. Officer Barnes tells her he never said it was her fault and leaves. Arriving at her mother's room, Claire finds her aunt, Lindsey, waiting inside. Questioned as to where she was, Claire tells her she went home to shower and get the glass out of her hair because she was told her mother was still in surgery. Lindsey sarcastically tells Claire she's glad she's feeling refreshed. Dr. Woodruff enters and tells Claire that they managed to stabilize her mother's immediate injuries, but she suffered a severe head trauma and they'll have to wait for the swelling to go down before they can determine the full extent of the injuries. The machines she is hooked up to are the only things sustaining her life, and he can't say if she will ever wake up. Dr. Woodruff tells Lindsey that Claire's mother will be well looked after as her expenses have already been taken care of by a confidential source. Arriving at the hospital to see her mother, Claire is informed that there is a new American doctor seeing her. Inside the room she finds a man watching over her mother — Christian Shephard. He tells Claire that he's a doctor and was about to leave, but Lindsey arrives and demands to know why he's there. Lindsey seems to think Claire's mother wouldn't want her to be there, but Christian tells her that she wouldn't be acting like she is. Claire asks Lindsey who Christian is, but she tells her that he's no one and should leave. Christian believes otherwise and the two argue, but Claire tells them to stop and asks Christian if he's the one paying the bills. He tells her that he is, and informs her that she's his daughter. Later, Christian comes to see Claire at her place of work, a tattoo and piercing parlor. He tells her he's leaving that night and will be out of her life forever, but wants to buy her one cup of coffee and speak with her. Grabbing that cup of coffee, Christian tells Claire that he learned about her mother's condition the moment she went into surgery through a doctor friend in Sydney. He had a fling with her and was back in Los Angeles when he learned that she was pregnant and was going to have the baby. After she was born, Christian visited her numerous times when she was a baby, giving her toys and singing to her. But he stopped visiting because Lindsey hated him and Claire's mother didn't like the fact Christian had another family. Christian informs Claire that her mother is alive, but not really living. He believes it's time to look at alternative means to ease her pain. He goes on to tell Claire that it is illegal to turn off the machines keeping her mother alive, but he knows of other ways to achieve the same effect without legal consequences. Upset at Christian's words, Claire tells him to go back to his real family and, although he may be her real father, she doesn't even know his name and wants it to stay that way. Claire tries to leave, but Christian stops her and tells her not to keep her mother alive for the wrong reasons. There is hope and then there is guilt, and he knows the difference. Months later, a pregnant Claire visits her mother in the hospital. With her mother still hooked up to machines keeping her alive, Claire converses with her. She tells her mother that she's pregnant, but she's giving the baby away. Claire doesn't know how she raised her alone, especially with how awful she was towards her. She apologizes to her mother for all the awful things she said to her in the car, that she hated her and wished she was dead. Claire blames herself for the accident and everything, and cries over her mother.

The Man from Tallahassee

Ben tries to persuade a determined Locke to call off his destructive plan by offering him some of the secrets of the island, and Kate's reunion with Jack does not go off as planned when she discovers that he has made a deal with "The Others."

See The Man from Tallahassee for full details.

Locke

Locke is in an office being questioned by a government worker. Asked if he has considered seeking out his biological parents, Locke tells her he doesn't see how the question is relevant. The worker tells him its relevant because she has to figure out if his condition has improved in order to determine if the government is going to continue paying him disability insurance. Noting that Locke has stopped submitting his therapy bills for reimbursement, the worker is told he stopped going because he believed it was a waste of time. In response, the worker temporarily suspends his benefits and tells him they'll continue once he resumes his therapy sessions for his depression. At his small apartment, Locke is eating a TV dinner while watching TV when he hears a knock at his door. The young man at the door identifies himself as Peter Talbot and asks to speak to Locke, grabbing Locke's attention by asking how many kidneys he has. Continuing their conversation inside, Peter tells Locke that his mother met a man named Adam Seward, a retired computer programmer from Ontario, two months ago and fell in love. After his mother agreed to marry Adam, Peter thought something was wrong and checked up on Adam, discovering that he was named Anthony Cooper and was the recipient of a kidney transplant from Locke. Locke tells Peter that it was an anonymous donation and he never met the man. At a flower shop, Locke finds Cooper with Mrs. Talbot as they shop for flowers for their wedding. Cooper notices his son watching and excuses himself, heading over to talk with Locke. He asks how he found out about the wedding and Locke tells him the woman's son found him and asked him why he donated a kidney. Locke surmises that Cooper is conning Mrs. Talbot; marrying her only for her money. He's not going to let Cooper ruin the Talbot's lives, and threatens to tell her the truth if he doesn't call off the engagement. Cooper agrees to Locke's terms and leaves. Locke pulls into his apartment complex and heads to his apartment when two detectives approach him. Detective Mason asks him if he knows a man named Peter Talbot, but Locke tells her he doesn't know him. Detective Reed gives out some physical stats and Detective Mason tells him they believe Peter was at his apartment two days ago. Locke tells them that Peter was a solicitor and he sent him away, but Detective Mason tells Locke that Peter's family is worth over $200 million and is curious as to what Peter was doing as a solicitor. Locke tells the detectives he doesn't know the man, but Detective Mason questions him as to why Peter had Locke's name and address in his pocket. Wondering why they would be looking through Peter's pockets, Locke learns that Peter is dead. Locke goes to Cooper's apartment to confront him over Peter Talbot's death. Cooper asks him why he would kill Peter, seeing as how he's been conning people for a long time and isn't about to sweat some rich kid. Locke demands to know why Cooper is still with Mrs. Talbot and is told that Cooper didn't end his relationship, that he was trying to find an angle to get some money out of her before he skipped town. But Peter died and his plan got shot to hell because of it. Mrs. Talbot called off the wedding, so there's no longer any profit in it for him. He tells Locke that he's a con man, not a murderer. Not satisfied with his father's answer, Locke wants to know that, if he called Mrs. Talbot, would she verify Cooper's claim of the wedding being called off. Cooper motions towards a telephone but, with Locke off his guard, Cooper knocks his son through a window and down eight stories to the ground below. Alive from the fall, Locke is in a hospital with the two detectives. Detective Mason tells him that his father fled to Mexico after their encounter and has disappeared. Locke's physical therapist enters the room and ushers the detectives out, telling them Locke has a busy day ahead of him. The therapist brings out a wheelchair and tells Locke it's time to get himself out of bed. Locke tells him he can't do it, but the man reminds Locke he fell eight stories and survived, so he doesn't want to hear what he can't do. The therapist picks Locke up and places him in the wheelchair before stepping out. Alone and confined to the wheelchair, Locke cries to himself.

Nikki/Paulo

At a strip club, Nikki, under the name Corvette, is dancing at a pole when she sees a man enter the club and head into a back room. Following the man inside, she discovers the money for an orphanage and that Mr. LaShade is actually The Cobra. LaShade motions to the man, but Nikki disarms him of his weapon, but is subsequently shot several times by LaShade. Two girls burst into the room, but LaShade tells the two Corvette was working for The Cobra and he will pay. The scene is cut and LaShade, played by Billy Dee Williams, helps Nikki up. The director of the show Exposé, Howard Zukerman, pulls Nikki aside and tells her that she doesn't need to die and could come back next season, but Nikki nixes the idea. Zukerman asks her if she'll be leaving Sydney for Los Angeles, but Nikki tells him she loves him and isn't leaving.

Having lunch with Zukerman, Nikki remarks that the frittatas are amazing. He tells her it's thanks to his new chef, Paulo, who just arrived in Sydney and came by his office every day until he gave Paulo the job. Zukerman insists Nikki take a roll and she discovers a bracelet in the basket. He tells her it's not a ring, yet, but is unable to finish his sentence as he experiences a heart attack. Paulo comes in, checking Zukerman's pulse and telling Nikki that the man is dead. Nikki removes a key around Zukerman's neck and tells Paulo that she wished he came up with another idea that wouldn't have forced her to eat the same food as Zukerman. The two head into Zukerman's closet and Nikki uses the key to open a hidden safe. Paulo goes to light up a cigarette, but Nikki stops him, telling him they poisoned Zukerman and don't need Paulo cigarette ashes as evidence against them. Inside the safe, Nikki pulls out a Russian nesting doll.

At Sydney International Airport, Paulo reads a news article on Zukerman's heart attack to Nikki. Relieved that their plan went off without a hitch, the two kiss. Nikki notices Paulo is chewing gum, and Paulo pulls out a box of nicotine gum from his bag with the Russian nesting doll and tells her he quit smoking. The two toast their new life together, but notice two young adults arguing — Shannon and Boone. Boone asks Paulo if he could borrow a chair from their table, but Shannon yells at him to just go and leaves. Boone thanks Paulo anyway and takes off after his step-sister. Nikki makes Paulo promise that they'll never end up like them.

With wreckage strewn across the beach from the crash, Nikki stumbles around the wreckage in search of Paulo. She thinks she found him, but only finds Leslie Arzt and continues her search. Boone rushes up to her, asking if she has a pen, but runs off in search of one when she doesn't give him an answer. She spots finally spots Paulo and gets to him, asking him if he's okay but then demands to know where the bag is.

Nikki and Paulo are searching through the luggage while discussing what the monster in the jungle might be, but Nikki tells Paulo to focus on looking for the bag. They've been on the island for six days and she thinks, when the Coast Guard arrives at any day now, the Coast Guard aren't going to let them stay on the island on the excuse that they're looking for one bag. Ethan Rom approaches the two, telling them he also lost his luggage and offers to help them out. He believes they might have better luck searching inland, as the plane broke apart over the island. Arzt passes the group, yelling that Boone took the water. As the survivors begin to gang up on Boone, Jack appears and tells them to stop. He found a source of fresh water up in the valley and is going to take a group there in the morning. As Nikki and Paulo watch on, Jack tells the assembled survivors that they need to work together, or they're going to die alone.

Nikki approaches Arzt at his shelter, finding him engrossed in studying insects. He tells her that he's found twenty new species and believes he's going to be the next Charles Darwin. She picks up a jar containing a spider, but Arzt quickly takes it away, telling her it contains Latrodectus regina or the Medusa spider. It is very dangerous and one whiff of her pheromones would cause every male around to arrive in seconds. Nikki asks Arzt if he knows anything about trajectories, seeing as how she's looking for her luggage and the plane broke apart over the island, spilling luggage across the island. Arzt agrees.

In the jungle, Nikki and Paulo follow Arzt's map, although Paulo has reservations about its accuracy. Nikki thinks Paulo is jealous of her speaking with Arzt, and she sarcastically tells him that Arzt's spiders turned her on so much she had to sleep with Arzt to get the map. In response, Paulo tells her he wouldn't be surprised seeing as how she slept with Zukerman. Continuing on, Paulo apologizes to Nikki, but tells her he doesn't trust Arzt and that they should have asked Ethan for help. But the two come across the crashed Beechcraft perched halfway off a cliff. Nikki tells Paulo to go up into the Beechcraft, but Paulo refuses, telling her she's insane and that the plane would fall. Moving on, Nikki notices Paulo walking over a half-buried metal hatch in the ground. The two open it and discover a ladder descending into the Pearl. Paulo wants to explore what's inside, but Nikki nixes the idea, telling him he has to focus on finding the lost carry-on bag and leaves.

At the beach, Nikki and Paulo find Shannon and Arzt arguing with Kate. Shannon tells Nikki that Kate, Sawyer and Jack found a case full of guns and neglected to tell the rest of the survivors. Kate tells them that the case is locked and Jack has the only key around his neck, so the guns are safe. Arzt references their actions to those of the pigs in Animal Farm and walks off, leaving Nikki to ask Kate where she found the case.

The two head to the small lake with the waterfall where the case was found. Nikki tells Paulo to stop being a wuss and to dive into the water, since she had to sleep with Zukerman and the least Paulo could do is dive in and find the case. Paulo asks her if they would be still be together if she didn't need him to find the bag, but Nikki tells him to just dive in. Going into the water, Paulo discovers their missing carry-on bag, but surfaces without it. Upon finding out that it's not in there, Nikki walks off without Paulo. Alone, Paulo dives back under to retrieve the bag.

At night on the beach, Paulo opens the carry-on bag and retrieves some of the nicotine gum. He starts digging a hole for the Russian nesting doll when Locke appears, asking him what he's doing. Locke tells him that every man is entitled to his secrets, but he should put the shovel away and save himself the trouble. Things don't stay buried on this island. Winter's coming and so high tide is going to erode the beach, so he should pick a spot that isn't going to wash away.

Descending into the Pearl, Paulo hides the Russian nesting doll inside the toilet's tank. After he's finished, Paulo hears to voices outside the bathroom. Ben wonders who left the hatch to the Pearl open, and Juliet tells him Tom came in a few days earlier. In response, Ben tells her to have them use the plane to cover the hatch. Ben uses the monitor controls to select a channel from inside the Swan, showing Jack. Juliet tells Ben that Jack would never agree to do the surgery, but Ben tells her he can convince him to do it by finding out what he's emotionally invested in and exploit it. They'll use Michael to get Shepard, Austen and Ford. The two leave the station, but Paulo finds a walkie talkie one of them accidentally left behind.

Locke announces to the group that they're heading to the Pearl station and asks if anyone wants to tag along. Nikki, not wanting to be left out, agrees to come along. Paulo, worried about the Russian nesting doll he hid inside the Pearl's toilet, accompanies her. Inside the station, Paulo removes the doll from the toilet tank but is forced to crack open the doll to get to the contents inside. He places the black bag in his pants and puts the doll pieces back inside the tank. He flushes the toilet and tells the group that the toilet still works.

Paulo finds Nikki sitting alone on the beach. She tells him that Thanksgiving what two weeks ago, that they missed it just like they're going to miss everything else. Paulo insists that they're going to be rescued, making Nikki wonder where his new-found optimism came from. He tells her it's just how you look at things, like how not finding the bag may have been good for them. That bag might have torn their relationship apart. Paulo tells her he's going to get them some breakfast, and leaves. Nikki notices a packet of nicotine gum that fell out of his pocket, and realizes that Paulo must have the bag. Upset, Nikki approaches Sawyer and demands he give her a gun. Sawyer tells her that Locke, Kate and Sayid took them all and, even if he did have one, he wouldn't give it to her.

Nikki brings Paulo into the jungle for a surprise. She tells him she found the diamonds and, showing him the nicotine gum, demands that he give the diamonds to her. She unscrews a jar and tosses the contents — a Medusa spider — at Paulo. The spider bites Paulo before he can get it off, and Nikki tells him that the spider's venom can paralyze a human being for about eight hours. It won't kill a person, but will slow his or her heart beat so much that even a doctor would have a hard time finding a pulse. With Paulo paralyzed, Nikki searches his person and finds the bag of diamonds. Paulo apologizes, telling her he was afraid of losing her if she found the diamonds. The chattering noise of the monster can be heard in the distance, but dozens of male Medusa spiders appear and one bites Nikki. She runs a short distance away, buries the diamonds, and takes off to the beach. She collapses in front of Hurley and Sawyer and tries to tell them that she's paralyzed.

Left Behind

After discovering that one of her own has betrayed her to "The Others," Kate is left to fend for herself in the jungle with Juliet. Meanwhile, Hurley warns Sawyer to change his selfish ways and make amends with his fellow survivors or he may face a vote of banishment.

Kate

Waiting by her broken down car, Kate learns that the car's fan belt is shot and the tow truck driver, Johnny, believes it'll take two to three days to get a replacement in as they're in Iowa. Johnny introduces himself to Kate and Kate introduces herself as "Lucy". Arriving at the gas station, Johnny notices a man arguing with a woman, Cassidy, and threatening to call the cops. The man tells him that the woman is trying to scam him into buying fake necklaces. The man tells Johnny to call the cops, but Kate asks to see Cassidy's necklaces, telling the group that her father owns a jewelry store and so she should be able to spot a fake. She offers to buy one of the necklaces and the two men walk off. Alone, Kate asks for her money back and walks off, but Cassidy asks her why she helped. Kate makes up an excuse, but Cassidy believes Kate is stranded and didn't want that man calling the cops. She offers to give Kate a ride into town in exchange for a drink. At a bar, Cassidy asks Kate her name. Kate tells her it's Lucy, but Cassidy asks her for her real name, telling her she shouldn't have to pause and think when someone asks for her name. Eventually Kate tells her that she's on the run because she killed her step-father a few months prior and then escaped from the marshal who arrested her. She's in Iowa because she wants to talk with her mother, Diane. Cassidy tells Kate that she's going to have one hell of a hard time getting to her mother as the Feds would be watching her, waiting for her to show up. Cassidy offers to help Kate meet her mom, because she was once conned by a bad guy and so one of them deserves something good. Cassidy, dressed up as Kate, walks up to Diane's trailer. After Diane answers the door, the Marshal exits the trailer with gun drawn, ordering her to get down, as a group of U.S. Marshals block off the road. The Marshal flips her over, but discovers the woman isn't Kate. Cassidy claims she's only selling Bibles, and the Marshal opens her luggage to find it containing Bibles. Kate watches the trap through binoculars from a distance. Later that day, Cassidy meets up with Kate at a hotel room, telling her she was questioned for over half an hour. Now that she knows how hard it's going to be and how she's had to lie to Federal agents just so Kate can chat with mother, Cassidy wants to know why Kate wants to see her mother. Kate tells Cassidy how her step-father beat her mother, so she blew him up and made it look like an accident. She took out an insurance policy on the house so her mother would be set up for life, but her mother gave her up. She chose her abusive husband over her daughter, and Kate wants to know why. At Keith's Diner, the diner Diane works at, Cassidy has Diane as her waitress and "accidentally" knocks a bowl of soup on her. As Diane is trying to clean her clothes in the bathroom, Kate exits one of the stalls and approaches her mother. She tells her mother she came because she wanted to know why she told the Feds what she did to Wayne. Diane tells her she thought she might have come to say she was sorry, but Kate tells her she's not sorry because of how Wayne hit her mother and treated her like a dog. In response, Diane tells Kate that she loved Wayne and that you can't help who you love. Kate only did what she did for herself. Diane tells Kate that, since she's her daughter, she won't tell the two Feds in the diner that she's there, but she'll yell for help if she ever sees her again. Cassidy drops Kate off at the gas station where Kate's car has been fixed. Kate thanks Cassidy for her help and offers to do something about the guy that ripped her off, but Cassidy tells her she's pregnant. The baby is his and she still loves him. Kate tells her she should call the cops on him, but Cassidy asks Kate if she'll ever forgive her mother for calling the cops. Kate tells her no. Cassidy thanks Kate and Kate tells Cassidy her real name.

One of Us

Juliet

In Florida, Juliet and her sister, Rachel, drive up to a gated complex. Juliet tells the guard her name and that she is with Mittelos Bioscience, and the guard tells her he'll notify Mr. Alpert of her arrival. Rachel wryly pokes fun at the level of corporate secrecy being taken, and Juliet tells her she doesn't think she'll fit in with them. Ethan Rom approaches the car and offers to take Juliet's luggage for her as Richard Alpert walks out to greet Juliet. Alpert tells Juliet and Rachel that, due to security, they'll have to take Juliet the rest of the way in alone, but tells them to take as much time as they need to say goodbye. Juliet expresses second thoughts to her sister and worries that her cancer might come back, but Rachel tells her it's gone and she's pregnant thanks to her work. The two say their goodbyes and Juliet enters the complex, getting into a white van. After checking in at the lobby of Herarat Aviation, Juliet is escorted to a waiting area by Alpert where her vitals can be checked by Ethan. Alpert mixes a considerable amount of tranquilizer into a glass of orange juice and gives it to Juliet, telling her that she's going to want to be asleep for the trip. Ethan chimes in, telling her it can be kind of intense. Put off by the request, Juliet tells them that she was fine with agreeing to their paperwork, not talking to anyone in her life for six months and that no one in the medical community has ever heard of Mittelos Bioscience. Alpert interrupts her, asking why she was fine with all those things, seeing as how it's a pretty big leap for a job opportunity and they aren't paying her that much. He believes she was fine with all those things because she knows that the place they're taking her to is special. He tells her that she has a gift, that she created life where life wasn't supposed to be, and that she'll be able to do something significant with that gift at where they're going. Juliet asks him where this place is, but Alpert only tells her that she'll see things she's never imagined there. He reminds her that no one is forcing her to do anything and they would be happy to take her back, but Juliet quickly downs the entire tranquilizer and orange juice mixer. Ethan tells her she probably shouldn't have drank that so fast and she passes out. Juliet regains consciousness and finds herself strapped down to a rack. Ethan unstraps her, telling her he had to strap her in because the last leg gets bumpy, but they've arrived. Climbing out of the submarine and onto its deck, Juliet discovers the secret location is an island. Ben appears and introduces himself to Juliet. Six months later, at the Staff's operating room, a female patient dies on the table while Ethan was operating on her. Ethan informs Juliet that the patient has died and leaves the operating room. Goodwin consoles Juliet, telling her she tried her best, and that she can take off as he'll inform Ben. Juliet takes solace on a rocky shore, watching the ocean when Ben approaches her. He tells her that Sabine wanted to get pregnant and knew she was taking a risk in doing so. Juliet tells him that she believes the problem occurs at conception and, if so, there's nothing she can do about it while on the island. The only way she can continue her research is by taking one of the women off the island and back to Miami, but Ben refuses to allow her to take anyone off the island. Juliet expresses her desire to return home and see her sister give birth as she hasn't been able to even talk to her while on the island, but Ben informs her that Rachel's cancer has returned and shows her the medical records to prove it. Ben makes Juliet an offer: leave and be with Rachel during her final days or stay on the island and help solve their problem. In return for staying, Ben promises to cure Rachel's cancer, reminding Juliet that she's done extensive workups on everyone on the island and couldn't find a trace of cancer. Juliet points out that he wouldn't let her sister come to the island, but Ben tells her that Jacob said he would take care of it himself. Roughly two years and six months later, Juliet is in bed with Goodwin at her house at the barracks. They hear a knock at the door and Juliet gets dressed to answer it. Goodwin gets dressed and finds Juliet at her desk, looking at X-rays that Karl developed for her. He notices something is wrong. With X-rays in hand, Juliet goes to Ben's house and informs him that he has a tumor on his spine. She points out that Ben looks scared about the news, yet no one on the island gets cancer and he promised to cure Rachel of her cancer. Juliet believes Ben lied to her, but Ben assures her that Rachel is fine. She pleads to Ben to let her go home, but Ben refuses and leaves. The following day, Juliet entertains the book club at her house when the building shakes. Rushing outside, the Others witness Oceanic flight 815 breaking apart overhead. Ben orders Ethan and Goodwin to infiltrate any survivors of the crash and bring back lists in three days. Turning his attention to Juliet, Ben tells her that they need to talk and asks her to accompany him on a walk. The two walk to the Flame, where Ben tries to inform Mikhail Bakunin over the walkie that they've arrived so he doesn't shoot them. Watching a bank of monitors showing news reports, Mikhail informs Ben that the plane was Oceanic flight 815, traveling from Sydney to Los Angeles with 324 people on board. Ben tells Mikhail he wants details reports on every single passenger, and then asks to uplink to Alpert in Arcadia Park. One of the monitors shows video of a Miami Journal newspaper with the day's date on it, September 22, 2004. Ben asks Alpert to continue and the camera shows Juliet's sister, Rachel, playing on a playground with a baby boy. Ben tells Juliet that, a little over two years ago, Rachel's cancer went into complete remission and she then gave birth to a healthy baby boy named Julian. Ben thanks Alpert and tells him he should probably get back soon as they're going to have new visitors, and the video feed cuts off. Juliet again tells Ben she wants to go home, but Ben reminds her that their agreement was for her to solve their problem in exchange for curing Rachel of her cancer. She tells him it's impossible, that all the mothers keeps dying, but Ben tells her they'll find more mothers. The night before the Others abandoned the barracks, Juliet meets with Ben alone to go over a plan. She is to drag Kate into the jungle and to handcuff herself to her, telling her she was gassed also. Ben asks her what to do if Kate catches her in the lie, and Juliet tells him she would admit to it and tell her it was the only way to earn her trust. She knows Ben wants her to go to the beach camp and, after everything they've done to them, it would be a problem. Ben informs her that they've activated the implant in Claire and she should be symptomatic by the time she arrives at the camp. A case will be hidden at Ethan's old supply drop and Juliet will be able to use it and solve the crisis. Ben hands her a gas mask and tells her he'll see her again in a week.

Catch-22

Desmond coaxes Charlie, Hurley and Jin on a trek across the jungle after experiencing one of his future-prophesizing "flashes" — but is he purposely placing Charlie’s life in harm’s way? Meanwhile, Kate turns to an unwitting Sawyer after seeing Jack alone with Juliet.

See Catch-22 for full details.

Desmond

At a monastery, Brother Campbell enters Desmond's room and hands him monk's robes. As Desmond puts them on, Brother Campbell tells him of how their vow of silence is a test for those who wish to join the monastery, and is as long as they see fit. Personally, he didn't think Desmond would make it, but now Desmond is one of them. Brother Campbell and Desmond bottle wine that the monastery produces. Desmond points out the vineyard's name, Moriah, and believes it to be ironic that the brothers have named the vineyard after the mountain on which God asked Abraham to kill Isaac. Brother Campbell reminds Desmond that God spared Isaac, but Desmond believes God shouldn't have asked Abraham to sacrifice his son in the first place. Brother Campbell points out that, in that case, it wouldn't have been much of a test and that Desmond may be underestimating the value of sacrifice. Another brother brings a man to see Desmond, and the man immediately punches Desmond in the face and leaves. Desmond knocks on the door of a house in the suburbs and the door is answered by the man who punched him, Derek. Asking for Derek's sister, Desmond is told to leave, but Ruth appears and agrees to talk to him. The two sit and have some tea, and Desmond tells her that he felt it was time to give her an explanation. Ruth believes he could never give an adequate explanation, seeing as how after six years of dating he left one week before the wedding when everything was planned, bought and paid for. Desmond tells her he was scared about the wedding and got drunk. When he woke up, a monk helped him up and he knew he was supposed to go with him, to leave everything that mattered behind for a greater calling. Unconvinced by his story, Ruth tells Desmond to simply tell the girl he's too scared the next time he wants to break up. Returning to the monastery, Desmond proceeds to get himself drunk off the monk's wine in the middle of the night. Brother Campbell finds him and asks him what he's doing, telling him the bottle of wine he's drinking fetches over £100. Desmond tells him it's good that they've taken a vow of poverty, but Brother Campbell reminds him they've also taken a vow of charity. Desmond apologizes for drinking the wine and agrees to take penance for it, but Brother Campbell tells him he's beyond penance and is fired. He believes God has different plans for Desmond than being a monk, that Desmond has spent too much time running away to realize what he may be running toward. Desmond asks him what he's supposed to do now, and Brother Campbell simply tells him to do what comes next. The next day, Desmond returns his robes to Brother Campbell. Before Desmond leaves, Brother Campbell informs him that Brother Martin is heading into town in a few hours and could give him a ride if he doesn't mind doing some heavy lifting. Outside, Desmond prepares ten crates of the monastery's wine while a woman, Penelope Widmore, meets with Brother Campbell and informs him that her father, Charles Widmore, has already sent a check for the wine. Brother Campbell says his goodbyes to Desmond and leaves. As he loads her vehicle, Desmond strikes up a conversation with Penny, telling her that the monastery only makes a limited number of cases each year because the monks are lazy. Asked how he knows so much about monks, Desmond tells her he used to be one until he got himself fired, that God allegedly has bigger plans for him. Penny tells him that they might be right, that if he hadn't gotten fired then they wouldn't have met and then he couldn't help her unload the crates in Carlisle. Desmond asks her if he said he was going to Carlisle with her, but Penny tells him he hasn't — yet. Telling her he doesn't usually get into cars with strangers, the two introduce themselves to one another.

Sun

In Korea, shortly after marrying Jin, Sun talks to him over a cellphone. After finishing her conversation with him, a woman sharing her bench points to a photograph in the newspaper and asks Sun if that is her and her husband. The woman congratulates Sun, telling her she's a very lucky woman, but then asks Sun if her family are the ones who own Paik Automotive. Sun tells her she doesn't have much to do with the family business and, questioned about Jin's parents, tells the woman that they're dead. The woman informs Sun that there would be much shame if it was known Mr. Paik's daughter married the son of a fisherman. Sun tells her she knows and it doesn't matter to her. However, the woman informs Sun that Jin is also the son of a prostitute. She tells Sun that she will return in three days and demands that Sun bring her $100,000 or she will reveal the truth. Sun is unpacking their belongings at their new apartment when Jin arrives with soup. Looking at her framed pictures, Sun asks Jin if he has any pictures of his family. Jin tells her he didn't have a camera growing up and his father never left any pictures as he was in the army when he died. Sun asks him how that could be possible when she was told his father died when he was sixteen. Upset at her questioning, Jin tells her she must have misunderstood and asks her why she's questioning him. Sun tells him it's nothing and apologizes. Sun goes to the Namhae fishing village Jin grew up at and approaches his father, Mr. Kwon. Mr. Kwon invites her to his home for some tea and inquires as to how their wedding went. Sun learns that Jin claimed his father was dead to avoid the shame of where he came from, and that Mr. Kwon claimed Jin's mother had died to avoid the shame she would bring upon Jin. Jin's mother had slept with many men and left Jin with Mr. Kwon. He didn't even know if Jin was his baby, but raised him regardless as there was no one to take care of him. He pleads with Sun not to tell Jin that she met him or that his mother is still alive, so that he won't suffer that shame. Returning home, Sun visits her father at his office at Paik Automotive. She tells him that she needs $100,000 and can't tell him what for. Mr. Paik's delight at seeing his daughter turns to consternation as he refuses to give her anything without an explanation. In response, Sun tells him she has pretended not to know what he does and allowed him to control her, but she would only continue to pretend if he gives her the money with no questions. Angered at being blackmailed by his own daughter, Mr. Paik deduces that Sun is doing it for her new husband, Jin. Mr. Paik takes $100,000 out of his personal safe and places it in an envelope. He warns Sun that if the money is for her husband, then it is he who would bear the debt by no longer being a floor manager. Instead, Jin would work for him personally. Despite the warning, Sun takes the money and leaves. At their apartment, Jin discovers the envelope of money in Sun's purse. Covering for the true purpose of the money, Sun tells him she got it from her father for furniture and a nice honeymoon. Jin tells her that, although it may take longer, he can provide for her. He asks that she return the money to her father as he doesn't want to be any further in his debt than he already is. Three days after the woman confronted her, Sun finds the woman at the specified location. Sun gives her the $100,000 and asks her why she didn't tell her she was Jin's mother. The woman defiantly tells Sun that, although she may have given birth to Jin, that does not make her his mother. Angered by the woman, Sun reminds her of how powerful her family is and threatens to have her killed if she gives her reason to.

Locke

Inside a room at the barracks, Locke discovers his father, Anthony Cooper, tied up and gagged. Ben claims that Locke was the one who brought him to the island. Locke removes Cooper's gag to ask him what's going on, but Cooper bites his hand. Tom tazes Cooper to release Locke's hand from Cooper's mouth. Cooper asks his son "don't you know where we are", but Tom closes the door between the two and Ben refuses to elaborate on Cooper's words. Instead, Ben reveals to Locke that they're moving to a new place and invites Locke to join them. Locke agrees.

The Others set up camp in a large clearing. Locke helps Cindy set up her tent, noticing members of the Others watching him as if they're in awe. Cindy tells Locke to not mind them, that they're just excited he's there as they've been waiting for him. Before Locke can question her, Tom tells him that Ben is asking to see him. Arriving at Ben's tent, Locke finds him listening to an audio tape. Ben tells him it's a recording Juliet made and that she's gathering information at Locke's former camp, determining who of the survivors are pregnant so they can take them. Ben gets out of his wheelchair, revealing to Locke that, since he arrived, he's been regaining the use of his own legs. He's eager to show Locke what the island can do, but Locke is not yet ready. Locke must show them that he's ready and willing to join them, to make a gesture of free will and commitment, and Locke's gesture is to kill his own father.

At night, Ben rouses Locke from his sleep, telling him it's time. He leads Locke to a nearby pillar that Cooper is tied to and hands Locke a knife. With his gag removed, Cooper snidely remarks on how Ben expects Locke will kill him and that Locke is spineless. Locke hesitates, noticing the Others gathering near the pillar to watch the killing. Cooper tells Ben that they've been through this before and Locke only wants his daddy, but Locke tells him to shut up and presses a knife against Cooper's throat. Ben urges Locke to go through with it, telling Locke that he'll otherwise be the same pathetic man who was kicked off a walkabout tour. Locke is unable to kill Cooper and Cooper makes a snide remark to his son, but Ben knocks Cooper unconscious with his walking stick. Turning to the gathered Others, Ben announces that Locke is not who they thought he was.

Sitting alone overlooking the Others' camp, Locke unravels the bandages covering the wound from Cooper biting his hand. He discovers it's been completely healed. Richard Alpert appears, introducing himself to Locke and taking a seat next to him. Alpert reveals to Locke that Ben wanted to embarrass him in front of the Others, that Ben knew he wouldn't kill his own father. When word got back to the Others that there was a man on the plane with a broken spine that could suddenly walk again, people became excited because that could only happen to someone who was extremely special. Ben, however, doesn't want anyone to think Locke's special. Alpert is revealing this information to Locke because Ben has been wasting their time with novelties like fertility problems and they're looking for someone to remind them that they're on the island for more important reasons. He wants Locke to find his purpose and the only way to do that is for Cooper to die. Since he knows Locke won't do it, he gives Locke a dossier on James "Sawyer" Ford and suggests he be the one to kill Cooper.

Locke wakes up to find the Others packing up and preparing to leave. He finds Ben and learns the Others are moving, but Ben has decided Locke isn't accompanying them. He is to stay behind with Cooper, but they'll leave a trail that Locke would be able to track. However, Ben warns Locke to not follow them unless he's carrying Cooper's dead body on his back.

The Man Behind the Curtain

Ben begrudgingly begins to introduce Locke to the secrets of the island, beginning with the mysterious Jacob. Meanwhile, Juliet's secret goes public.

Ben

In the woods, a woman named Emily is in the process of giving birth. Her husband, Roger Linus, delivers the baby boy and gives him to Emily to hold. But Emily tells Roger she's hurting and Roger notices she's still bleeding profusely. Roger picks the two up and carries them through the woods, eventually arriving at the side of a road thirty-two miles outside of Portland, Oregon. Roger manages to flag down a passing car and tells them he was hiking with Emily when she went into premature labor. Before the group can take Emily to a hospital, Emily tells Roger to call their son Benjamin and passes away. As a young boy, Ben arrives on the island with his father and other people aboard a submarine. Walking along the dock to the shore, the group is greeted by a large sign proclaiming "Namaste!" and The DHARMA Initiative. Casey, a DHARMA gemologist, greets Ben and Roger, giving the two leis. Horace, a DHARMA mathematician and the man who Roger flagged down when Emily died, welcomes the two to the island. Roger thanks Horace for the job opportunity, and introduces Horace to Ben, noting that Ben doesn't talk much. Horace tells Ben it's okay and he knows he'll say something when he has something to say. He leads them onward to processing where new arrivals watch an orientation film narrated by Dr. Marvin Candle. Dr. Candle asks the new arrivals to stay within the confines of the barracks as they're surrounded by a high-frequency sonar fence to protect them from the island's abundant and diverse wildlife. Every morning there is a new code given to allow travel outside of the fence. Dr. Candle continues, telling the new arrivals that there are properties on the island that exist no where else on Earth, and the DHARMA Initiative's mission is to study these properties for the betterment of mankind and advancement of world peace. A young girl, Annie, greets Ben and gives him an Apollo candy bar. Over at assignments, Roger discovers he's to be a work man and is incredulous at the idea, that Horace said they were doing experiments to change the world and he didn't come to clean up after them. Olivia, a DHARMA teacher and the woman who was with Horace when Roger flagged them down at Ben's birth, teaches a class full of young children about volcanic reactions. As she proceeds with a demonstration, the ground begins to tremble and the building shakes. After the tremor stops, gunshots can be heard in the distance and an alarm sounds. Olivia orders the children to their safety positions while the doors are chained shut and she loads a rifle. Outside, armed DHARMA workers rush off toward the sound of gunfire and explosions. Annie tells a frightened Ben that it's just the hostiles and they'll be okay. Later that night at Ben's residence, Ben overhears his father talking with Horace. Roger tells Horace that he was heading back from The Flame when he heard a huge explosion and was suddenly driving through a huge shootout. Horace informs him that they've been having some skirmishes with the natives; people DHARMA aren't exactly sure who they are. Roger, drinking heavily, tosses an empty beer can at Horace and tells him he didn't sign up for this. Horace reminds Roger that he did him a favor finding him work and that Ben is receiving a quality education. Roger, however, tells Horace he doesn't give a damn about Ben's education, demanding hazard pay for getting shot at and yelling at him to get out. Ben turns to go back to bed, but sees his dead mother outside his bedroom window. He trips and falls backwards, and his father enters and tells him to go back to bed. Turning back to the window, Ben sees nothing there. On Ben's birthday, Ben and Annie play on a swingset at the barracks. Ben opens a gift from Annie, finding two hand-carved wooden figurines inside. Annie tells him that the figurines are him and her, so they will never have to be away from each other. That night, Ben returns to his home to find Roger passed out on the couch surrounded with beer cans. He tries to take off his father's other shoe, but his father wakes up. Noticing Annie's present on the table, Roger realizes it's Ben's birthday and apologizes while taking another swig of beer. He tells Ben it's kind of hard to celebrate on the day Ben killed his mother. Now she's gone and he's stuck on the island with Ben. Roger lays back down on the catch, beer in hand, and wishes a tearful Ben a happy birthday. Ben rushes out of the house and through the jungle, arriving at the sonar fence. Ben hears whispering around him and sees his mother on the other side of the fence. Ben starts to cross the fence, but his mother stops him. She tells Ben it isn't time yet and disappears into the jungle. Later, Ben approaches the sonar fence with packed bags and the daily code. He deactivates the fence and safely crosses it. Proceeding into the jungle, Ben searches for his mother and hears whispering on the wind. However, he comes across a long-haired man in ragged clothing with a gun — Richard Alpert. Richard asks Ben if he's lost, trying to assure Ben he isn't going to hurt him. Ben asks Richard if he's one of the hostiles, but Richard asks Ben if he even knows what the word means. Asked what he's doing in the jungle by himself, Ben tells Richard that he's looking for his dead mother. Richard's interest is piqued, and he soon discovers that Ben's mother died off the island and that Ben saw her here and actually spoke to him. Richard tells Ben he should return home, but Ben tells him he hates it there and refuses. He wants to go with Richard. Richard tells Ben that, if that's what he wants, then he'll have to be very, very patient. Years later, Ben is an adult working with DHARMA as a work man. Picking up the figurine of Annie, Ben places it into his messenger bag and leaves. He helps his father load up a DHARMA van with supplies. Roger notices his son is quiet when he's usually talkative in the morning and learns that it's Ben's birthday. Realizing he's forgotten again, Roger tells Ben that, after they run the supplies to The Pearl, they'll drive up to the mesa and drink some beers together. Ben agrees. Arriving at the mesa, Ben asks Roger if he really blames him for Emily's death. Roger dodges the question and tells Ben he'll do his best to remember his birthday next year. But Ben tells him that's not going to happen and puts on a gas mask. He pops a gas canister, and his father begins to bleed from the nose and dies. Ben hikes back to the barracks and discovers all the DHARMA workers laying on the ground, dead. He finds the body of Horace, the mathematician who tried to help him and his father, and closes his eyes. Richard leads a group of armed hostiles with gas masks onto the barracks grounds and, after looking at his watch, safely removes his gas mask. He asks Ben if he wants them to bring back his father's body, but Ben tells him to leave it out there. The hostiles begin to pile up the bodies.

Charlie

Charlie and his brother, Liam, are stuck in the middle of nowhere and in the rain as they attempt to change a flat tire on their band's van. Exasperated, Charlie asks his brother why they're bothering with all this, while Liam tries to convince him they're building their fan-base. Despite Liam's "bright-side" of things, Charlie decides to quit Drive Shaft as they're broke and their album isn't selling. One of their band-mates interrupts the argument, telling them that their song "You All Everybody" is playing on the radio. Charlie and Liam celebrate. As a young boy, Charlie stands at the edge of a pool as his father, Simon, attempts to coax him into the water. Simon promises to catch him, but Charlie believes he'll just back away. Simon picks him up and helps him swim. Inside a hotel room in Helsinki, Finland, Charlie is in bed with two women when Liam comes running in. As an early Christmas present and the fact that Charlie is drug-free and not a mess like himself, Liam gives Charlie his ring bearing "DS". Charlie refuses the gift, reminding Liam that their mother gave it to Liam for being the first-born. The ring is a family heirloom and the reason they named the band after Dexter Stratton. Liam believes the ring has to stay in the family and Charlie is the best person to make sure that it does. Charlie relents, agreeing to hold onto it but not take it. On a street corner in London, Charlie plays a cover of Oasis' "Wonderwall" when it begins to rain. While walking down the street, Charlie sees a woman yelling for help in an alley. Nadia tells him that he's a hero and not to let anyone tell him otherwise. The night of the crash of Oceanic flight 815, Charlie sees Claire and offers her his blanket. He tells her they're going to be okay, that they're alive on a beautiful island. They'll sleep under the stars and the rescue helicopters will come and take them all home. The two introduce themselves.

Jack

A bearded Jack is aboard an Oceanic Airlines flight, downing a drink before asking the flight attendant for another. The flight attendant refuses Jack's request, telling him the flight is about to land shortly and hands him a newspaper instead. The aircraft shudders and the pilot comes over the intercom, informing the passengers that they're experiencing a bit of turbulence as they prepare to land in Los Angeles. A headline on the newspaper catches Jack's eye and he tears the article out. The flight successfully lands in Los Angeles, but Jack pulls his vehicle over on the 6th Street Bridge and, looking over the article again, becomes emotional. Jack calls someone and gets their voicemail, but is unable to finish what he wants to say and hangs up. Exiting his vehicle, Jack prepares to jump off the bridge and asks for forgiveness. Before he can jump, a car accident occurs on the bridge and Jack rushes off to help the victims. At St. Sebastian's Hospital, Jack gets patched up by a doctor and told news crews are waiting for him as he's a hero. Jack learns the woman involved in the accident who he saved is stabilized. A pregnant Sarah enters the emergency room to see Jack. The doctor tells her she can't be in the ER, but Jack tells her it's okay as they used to be married. Alone, Sarah asks Jack what he was doing on the bridge and if he's been drinking again. Jack is adamant that he isn't. Sarah tells him she came as she's still listed as his emergency contact, but wonders what he was doing driving around at 2am. Jack refuses to answers, but asks for a ride home. Sarah tells him it wouldn't be appropriate and leaves. The next day, with an unsteady hand, Jack looks over the medical chart of the woman he saved and then pops a few pills. A doctor enters and introduces himself as Dr. Hamill, the hospital's new chief of surgery. Dr. Hamill is pleased to meet Jack, the hero twice over, and states how the woman is lucky Jack was nearby at the time of the accident. Jack shoots back how the woman woman would be lucky if she didn't have a fractured spine that was impinging on her spinal chord. Jack requests to perform surgery on the woman in the morning, but Dr. Hamill reminds him that the woman isn't his patient and Gary Nadler is performing the surgery in the morning. Dr. Hamill believes that Jack did enough in saving the woman and her son, and should go home and rest. Jack reluctantly gives up, but asks Dr. Hamill to call him as soon as the woman's surgery is finished. Leaving the hospital, Jack fishes out the article he ripped out of the newspaper and eventually stops outside a funeral parlor. Jack calls someone on their phone, getting their voicemail again, and hangs up. Jack takes another quick look at the article before slipping back into his pocket and getting out, crossing the street nonchalantly and causing a car to come to a screeching halt. Inside, Jack finds the viewing area empty aside from a closed casket. The funeral director greets Jack and Jack asks him if the funeral is over. He learns there was no funeral, only a viewing, and he is the only person who showed up. The funeral director offers his deepest condolences and asks if Jack is friend or family, but Jack tells him he's neither. Jack declines the funeral director's offer to open the casket and the director leaves him alone. Spending a few moments in front of the casket, Jack pops his remaining pill and leaves. At a pharmacy, the pharmacist notifies Jack that there are no more refills on his prescription. Jack believes that's wrong as he only refilled it twice, but the pharmacist tells him she double-checked and that was his third refill. While fishing out another prescription from his pocket, a customer behind Jack tells him that he knows him, that he's the hero from on TV. The customer asks the pharmacist if she knows who Jack is and tells her to just give him what he wants. Jack hands the pharmacist his other prescription, but the pharmacist tells him he can't write a prescription for himself. Jack corrects her, telling her the prescription was written by his father, Dr. Christian Shephard. The pharmacist tells him she'll need to call Christian Shephard's office to confirm the prescription, infuriating Jack who slams the counter and tells her not to bother. As he walks off, Jack staggers into a sunglass display and walks off. Jack returns to St. Sebastian's and gets into the medicine closet, pocketing some Oxycodone and popping one. Leaving the closet, Jack knocks over some medical records in his drugged state. As he's picking them up, Dr. Hamill appears and asks Jack what he's doing. Jack tells him he's looking for the charts of the woman, but Dr. Hamill tells him he left three messages on Jack's voicemail. Dr. Hamill asks to speak with Jack in his office, but Jack tells him he can say whatever he has to say right there. Dr. Hamill tells Jack that the woman came out of surgery just fine, but said she saw a man standing atop the railing of the bridge and about to jump off. She was distracted, lost control of her car and had the accident. The question Dr. Hamill has is how Jack got to the flaming wreck so quickly; what was he doing on the bridge? Jack refuses to answer the question, instead asking Dr. Hamill if he knows anything about him and what he's been through. Dr. Hamill asks Jack how much he's had to drink, but Jack asks him to bring his father down and, if he's drunker than his father, then Dr. Hamill can fire him. Dr. Hamill tells him that he's trying to help him to which Jack yells that he can't help him. Jack walks off as Dr. Hamill and the other hospital staff stare at him. At Jack's home at night, dirty dishes and food clutter his sink. Jack sits against a wall with maps of the South Pacific spread out all over the place, empty alcohol bottles and pill containers scattered about. Jack makes another call and finally gets through, asking the person on the other end not to hang up. He asks to see the person by the airport. At the airport, a car pulls up behind Jack's vehicle. Jack gets out to greet its driver — Kate. Kate tells him she saw him on the news, that he still seems to be pulling people out of burning wreckage. Asked why he called her, Jack pulls out the article and hands it to her. He hoped she might have heard and gone to the funeral, but Kate asks why she would bother going and hands the article back. Jack tells her he's been flying a lot, using the golden pass Oceanic gave them all to fly every Friday from Los Angeles to somewhere else on the other side of the Pacific. He gets off, has a drink and gets right back on again to fly home. Asked why, Jack tells her that he wants the plane to crash and doesn't carry about any of the other passengers. With every bump of turbulence, he closes his eyes and hopes that he can get back to the island. He believes they made a mistake leaving the island. Kate tells him that she needs to go, that he'll be wondering where she is, but Jack stops her. He tells her they were not supposed to leave, but Kate tells him they were and returns to her car. Jack yells at her that they have to go back.
