Season Forty-Two of Masterpiece Theatre premiered on January 8, 2012. Like the previous four seasons, it included British imported programming, presented under different themes, but now the Masterpiece Contemporary monocle was dropped, leaving only Masterpiece Classic and Masterpiece Mystery.

• TV movie The Mystery of Edwin Drood, airing on April 15;
• miniseries Birdsong, airing April 22-29;

Masterpiece Mystery included:

• Sherlock, season 2, airing May 6-20;
• The Endeavour pilot, airing on July 1;
• Lewis, season 6, airing July 8-29;
• Wallander, season 3, airing September 9-23
