Naveen Andrews is a British-born American actor, best known for his role as Sayid Jarrah in ABC's Lost.
Biography
Naveen Andrews was born on January 17, 1969 in London, England. The eldest of two brothers, Andrews is of Indian descent and was raised in Wandsworth, South London to a fairly conservative family. At the age of 16, Andrews fell in love with his mathematics teacher, Geraldine Feakins, with whom he had a son, Jaisal, born in 1992. He later auditioned for drama school and was accepted at London's Guildhall School of Music and Drama. While in London in his early twenties, however, Andrews became a drug addict and alcoholic, and his screen career nearly ended. Andrews moved to the United States to seek rehabilitation and was able to get his life back on track, but he says that London provides painful memories of his alcohol and heroin addictions. He is in a relationship with actress Barbara Hershey and they live in Los Angeles, California. The two separated briefly in 2005, during which Andrews had a son with another woman. Andrews and Hershey have since then reconciled. Andrews became an American citizen on May 27, 2010.
Andrews acting career started when he won a role in Hanif Kureshi's 1991 film, London Kills Me. In 1993, Andrews was nominated by the Evening Standard Drama Awards as Most Promising Newcomer for his part in Wild West. His big break occurred when he was cast opposite Juliette Binoche, Ralph Fiennes and Kristin Scott Thomas in the Oscar-winning film, The English Patient. He went on to appear in such films as Kama Sutra, Mighty Joe Young, True Love and Chaos, Bride and Prejudice, and Drowning on Dry Land. On television, Andrews starred in the BBC's The Buddha of Suburbia, for which he received the award for Best Actor at the San Remo Film Festival. He also starred in the BBC's Peacock Spring. In the United States, he starred in two ABC series, as Sayid Jarrah on Lost and as the wizard Jafar (based on the main villain of the same name in the Disney animated movie Aladdin) on Once Upon a Time in Wonderland.
