Basic Information
Appointed by The Royal Court of Spain as Military Governor of Santa Helena and surrounding district.
Character History
Montoya's father was a lowly civil servant, but his mother had money (Ep 6). Appointed Governor he strode to improve his position and wealth by exploiting the local peasants (Ep 2) and when the opportunity to seize a Don's land he would take it (various episodes).
This brought him into contact with Tessa Alvarado recently returned to Santa Helena following her fathers death (Ep 1). Incensed by his actions of shooting her father's manservant, unbeknownst to him she becomes the Queen of Swords.
He hatches a plan to kill the Queen by ambushing her as she follows peasants used as slaves at a gold mine (Ep 2).
His plans to kill the Queen thwarted, he uses an assassin (Ep 4), employs a professional swordsman (Ep 6), two conmen (Ep 19), and a female Samurai Warrior (Ep 20).
He attempts to discredit the Queen (Ep 9) in the eyes of the peasants, and his greatest triumph was to turn the Dons against the Queen (Ep 22) and have Marshal Law declared and every Don, Ranchero, and peasant was enlisted to kill the Queen.
The Queen's exploits had become a legend in Spain, and an Emissary from The Royal Court, with a journalist in tow to record the events, hatched his own plan to kill the Queen (Ep 12) and his scheming with Captain Grisham meant Montoya took desperate measures to save his position.
He often came into conflict with Don Hidalgo and when threats failed, plotted Hidalgo's death (Ep 17).
