"I'm ugly! Ugly, Ugly!" Marcia cries out as she looks into the mirror. The source of her tearful realitization: Her new braces, which she is convinced have harmed the fair Brady's looks. Her fears are only confirmed when her boyfriend, Alan, cancels their date to the upcoming school dance. He explains that he is going out of town on the night of the dance to visit his grandmother, and that his parents are making him go. Marcia is convinced Alan is lying and runs to her room in tears; whether her suspicion is justified is never revealed.

However, Mike, Greg and Alice all want to cheer Marcia up ... and get her a replacement date in time for the dance. So all three of them, without consulting the other or even letting on what's going on, talk to the son of a client (Mike), a classmate (Greg) and the grocery delivery boy (Alice) to find Marcia's date. The lack of coordination is quickly exposed when they all show up on the night of the dance, and Marcia once again runs upstairs in tears.

But everything turns out alright for Marcia in the end. Alan has an accident with his bicycle, and he needs braces too. He shows his tinsel teeth, and Marcia quickly laughs her tears away. It isn't long before Marcia is ready to dance the night away!
