Plot Overview

With all her friends taken, Yumiko is put into a position to prosecute Eugene in hopes of freeing them.

The only ones to escape capture, it's up to Carol and Daryl to rescue them, having to go to Hornsby for help.

Happenings

• All of those from the Coalition is removed from the Commonwealth except Yumiko. Carol and Daryl free Hornsby and learn from him that the Commonwealth has a train with plans of connecting to other communities. Daryl and Carol plan to follow it to find the others who are being transported and kept sedated.

Characters

• Yumiko is the only one Pamela doesn't have removed from the Commonwealth because she wants Eugene's trial to seem impartial and arranges a press conference to make the announcement. Instead, Yumiko states her intent to defend him.

• Hornsby is set free and helps Daryl and Carol until he gives them enough information that they don't need him. They intend to let him go and make his own way, but he grabs a gun, forcing Carol to shoot an arrow in his neck and they leave him to die.

• Judith: My mom once told me that the only thing more dangerous than the dead is the living. But without the living, we might as well be dead. We all need people we can count on. And that's not just about words... but action... having the strength to put someone else's life ahead of your own. Carol: Yeah, but this isn't gonna be easy.

• Hornsby: What comes after?

Carol: After what?

Hornsby: The unrest in the Commonwealth. Let's say Pamela doesn't survive it. That's going to open up a power vacuum. And when that happens, well, just look at history. The people who suffer the most in revolutions are the civilians.

Carol: What is your point?

Hornsby: You and your people will hold 50,000 lives in your hands.

Carol: Until I find my people, there is no "after."

Hornsby: You'll find them. I know you. And then you'll have a choice to make. Will you let the Commonwealth burn?

Carol: That's not my problem.

Hornsby: Sure. Yeah, you want to leave all this behind you. I... I get it. Me, too. But what about the kids? Are you really gonna deny them their only chance for the kind of life we took for granted? Doesn't the next generation deserve better than the one before? Otherwise, what's the point?

• Carol: Commonwealth has a working train?

Hornsby: It was part of a plan, a vision, to expand the Commonwealth's reach. Connecting communities like yours all the way to the sea.

Carol: Connecting or conquering?

• Hornsby: But you still need me. We talked about this. Not burning the Commonwealth down. Creating a - a better future for the children, for everyone. I know you heard me.

Carol: Yeah, only because you wouldn't shut up.
