Biography
Kenny was born in East Syracuse, New York to Theresa Bridget and Paul Austin Kenny. As a young child growing in the late 1960s and 70s, he loved drawing and collecting records. He went to Bishop Grimes High School, a Catholic high school located in Syracuse. He became friends with comedian Bobcat Goldthwait when Goldthwait got into trouble with one of the teachers, who had dragged him into Kenny's class. Both men remained friends through school and college. They later appeared in films directed by and starring Bobcat such as Shakey the Clown and World's Greatest Dad.
While working on the Nickelodeon series Rocko's Modern Life, Kenny met marine biologist and animator Stephen Hillenburg, who was the creative director during the fourth season. Years before the airing of the show, Hillenburg made a comic book titled The Intertidal Zone in 1989, and a friend of his told him it would be a good idea to make an animated series based on it.
