Basic Information

Fai is a magician from the land of Ceres. He left there to get away from King Ashura and now travels with Syaoran and the rest to get back Princess Sakura's feathers.

He is a strong fighter, and has magic powers that he never uses. The item he gave up in exchange for the ability to travel was the magical seal on his back—which was not actually the source of his powers, but rather a device to keep them in check.

Fai has a cheerful, pleasant manner that gets on Kurogane's nerves.

Character History

Fai and Yui were a pair of twins born in distant world. Because twins were bad luck and could possibly curse their land, the two were given a choice: one could die, or they could both be imprisoned. They chose the latter option, and ended up imprisoned at a tower—Fai inside at the top, Yui outside at the bottom. Eventually Fei Wong Reed arrived, offering freedom to Fai for only one of the twins. Fai chose to let his brother Yui go, and so Reed took Yui away.

Reed brings Yui to Ceres, where he is apprenticed to King Ashura. He changes his name to Fai. He comes to care for Ashura, but eventually finds out that Ashura is responsible for the death of many villagers. To prevent Ashura from killing further, Fai sealed him under the water in a pool.

Eventually Fai decides to leave, as he did not want to be around when Ashura woke up. He used his own magic to travel to the Dimensional Witch, Yūko. There she granted his wish—to travel anywhere but his home dimension. He now travels with Sakura, Syaoran, Kurogane, and Mokona in search of Sakura's lost memories.

Fai has proven to be an adept fighter, though in The Resolution to Live, Kurogane pointed out that Fai has no will to live, and does not care if he is killed. He was later killed by Seishiro in The Disappearing Life. This turned out to not be real at all, merely a virtual reality and it is currently unseen whether this made Fai rethink his outlook on dying.

Trivia

  • The official romanization for Fai's name is given as "Fay D. Flourite" (as per the character guide and episode bumpers). However, romanization is not the same as an official translation, and this spelling does not concur with standard English pronunication. The spelling of Fai's name as used here is the official manga translation from Del Rey.
